It was the dustbag that really set people off

And so it went with the unboxing over eight more posts, in which Ms. Harmon revealed perfumes (good), key chains (not so much), lipstick and nail polish (mostly good, even if they were also mostly sample size), a mirror (not), a rope bracelet with a CC wax stamp (huh?), a plastic mini snow globe and … a Chanel dustbag, the bags used for shoes or other accessories. It was the dustbag that really set people off.

Five Echoes

[Artist and stage designer Es] Devlin and Chanel will transform the plaza into a multisensory labyrinth entitled “Five Echoes,” starting with a lush forest with more than 20 plant species (a nod to Coco Chanel’s upbringing in Abbey of Aubazine surrounded by woods). A luminescent sculpture that interprets the legendary Chanel N° 5 fragrance through sound and sight emerges at the center of the forest, featuring a soundscape developed in collaboration with Chanel’s in-house perfumer Olivier Polge.

You need a vat of Chanel No. 5? And of course you want the vat done up by Baccarat. 2021 ml of extrait in a lambskin coffret with a crystal wand, €28,000. 55 bottles were made, so hop to it.

His desk is precisely as you’d expect – handwritten notes and branches of blotters jut out from short metal stands, surrounded by boxes brimming with collections of indecipherably labelled small glass bottles. In each, he explains, is an ongoing experiment; constantly evolving concoctions which, he hopes, will one day lead him to another perfect perfume.
