They all smell exactly the same

Posted by Robin on 20 June 2008 9 Comments

It’s cheap to make, so accountants love it. It’s easy, so creatives love it. Kenzo’s Pour Homme, loaded with methylbenzodioxepinone to add a fake sea-breeze smell, is permanently atop the bestseller list in France, grinding out cash. Yves Saint Laurent’s Homme is found at Bloomingdale’s on Lexington, Creed’s Acier Aluminium is found at Bergdorf’s on Fifth, and Derek Jeter Driven is found at Walgreen’s everywhere. They all smell exactly the same.

— Chandler Burr in the New York Times, writing about Chanel's Allure Homme Sport.

Chasing the perfect scent ~ perfume on the radio

Posted by Robin on 10 March 2008 Leave a Comment

What perfume is on your wrist, or dabbed behind your ear? Is it expensive like Channel No. 5 or celebrity endorsed like Glow by JLo? Are your sons wearing AXE cologne while you prefer Old Spice? Where do these scents come from? Who are the people creating what we'll smell like next year? Is there such a thing as "the perfect scent"? Investigative journalist Chandler Burr joins us with an insiders view of this very lucrative and equally secretive industry.

— Chandler Burr talks to Puget Sound Public Radio about his new book, The Perfect Scent. The interview is almost an hour long, and was broadcast in early February; I haven't heard it yet but hope to later today. Thanks to Joy for the link!

Smells like money

Its scent is reminiscent of a just-picked apple and a rose in its prime. But to the Japanese company Takasago that manufactures this synthetic material, it smells even sweeter.

Last year, that chemical concoction, whose trade name is Thesaron, became an essential ingredient in a new perfume, Silver Shadow Altitude, released by Davidoff, a brand owned by Coty. Playing a role in one of the most successful international fragrance brands...means the "molecule," as the industry refers to any such chemical, is highly profitable for Takasago.

The Perfect Scent by Chandler Burr ~ perfume book review

Posted by Marcello on 24 January 2008 19 Comments

Chandler Burr, The Perfect ScentLong before his appointment as the world's first professional perfume critic, Chandler Burr had made a name for himself as a perfume journalist with a bit of an edge. His excellent New Yorker article on the creation of Hermès Un Jardin sur le Nil, which gave us a glimpse behind the scenes of this secretive industry, was followed by his regular contributions for The New York Times on the current state of perfumery, in which he wrote passionately about his aversion against the mystification, the anachronistic traditions, and the unspoken rules in the perfume trade. The vastness of his contacts is the envy of most perfume bloggers, and sometimes I wonder if he made more enemies than friends in the past years — which I mean as a compliment, of course. Hardly surprising then, that his latest book was so highly anticipated by many, including me.

If scientific controversy was a central theme in The Emperor of Scent, The Perfect Scent takes a swing at the maladies of the perfume industry. Burr uncovers its deeper mechanisms, from the dilemmas faced by manufacturers who are forced to accept assignments without contracts, to the pointless secrecy in which perfume formulae are still enveloped…
