Mariah Carey Luscious Pink ~ perfume review

Posted by Robin on 5 August 2008 106 Comments

Luscious Pink fragrance by Mariah Carey

Luscious Pink is the second fragrance from Mariah Carey, and follows last year's M by Mariah Carey. Elizabeth Arden, who holds the license for Mariah Carey's perfume line, is hoping the new scent will find an audience in the growing Asian perfume market, and so the tag line, “Embrace the Ethereal” is more than just the usual hyperbole — you'd expect “inoffensive” rather than “unusual” or “big statement” from such a thing, and that's just what you'll get with Luscious Pink.

Elizabeth Arden is calling Luscious Pink a “sparkling floral”; to my nose, the emphasis is laid on the sparkling far more than the floral. The opening is fresh and diffusive, with pale pink fruits — I don't know what fruits those would be, in particular, but that's what they smell like: pale pink fruits…

Fancy Jessica Simpson ~ perfume review

Fancy Jessica Simpson

Jessica Simpson‘s debut fragrance, Fancy Jessica Simpson, is due to launch officially later this month. If you read here regularly, you already know that I’m pathetically out of it when it comes to pop culture — I don’t read People, I don’t listen to the radio, and I don’t watch much “live” TV — and so Jessica Simpson is as mysterious to me as the rest of them. I don’t know a darned thing about her personally, although I take it from prior comments here that she sings. But I do know one thing about her that is arguably more germane to this discussion anyway, and that is that she used to have a line of scented body products under the name Dessert Beauty.

The Dessert Beauty line, a collaboration between Simpson and Clean’s Randi Shinder, featured products like “Belly Button Love Potion Double Dip Fragrance” (in scents called “Juicy” and “Creamy”) and “Deliciously Kissable Hot Body Topping” (in “Maraschino Cherry” or “Caramel”). If those sound appealing to you, Fancy might be right up your alley…

Davidoff Adventure ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 24 July 2008 40 Comments

Ewan McGrefor for Davidoff Adventure cologne for men

“For Davidoff Adventure, my inspiration has been what I dream about adventure…a dream of wild nature where bright colors and hot spices blend with the humid freshness of the rainforest and the sensuality of exotic woods,” Antoine Lie, perfumer*

I don’t know how much traveling Lie has done, but with Adventure, he’s stayed on the beaten path and only dreamed of wild places and rough journeys. Davidoff, who may have reined in Lie’s more daring ideas, makes many claims in its Adventure ad campaign: Adventure “explores uncharted fragrance territory” “is daring and elemental” and was “inspired by … wildernesses and raw, masculine emotion.” “Rainforest,” “wild earth,” “intense thrill,” “discovery,” “exoticism,” and “challenge” are reference points for the aura Adventure aspires to capture. This is all reminiscent of Ralph Lauren’s ad campaign for its Polo (armchair) Explorer fragrance…
