Fragrances to soothe the frazzled holiday shopper from CB I Hate Perfume

Posted by Robin on 29 November 2005 29 Comments

CB I Hate Perfume Just Breathe fragrance

For the holiday season, Marie Claire magazine asked Christopher Brosius of CB I Hate Perfume to create an exclusive fragrance for their December Gift Guide. Their request: something that would calm the over-stressed Type A personality. The result is Just Breathe, with notes of bamboo leaves, Japanese green tea, three varieties of cedarwood, and incense.

Just Breathe is a light, calming fragrance in a water formula that allows you to use it on your skin, your clothing, or as a room spray. If it was a color, it would be a very pale celadon green, and that describes the smell as well: pale leafy greens with a light wood undertone and the teensiest hint of incense. It would create a perfect atmosphere for yoga or meditation, if you are the sort of person who undertakes such activities, and makes a lovely spray for the bedsheets just before going to sleep…

Two very different takes on the recent spate of celebrity fragrances: “Celebrity Stinks” in The Globe and Mail (link no longer working, sorry!), and “Celebs have a nose for popular scents” in USA Today. Thank you to Patty for the link!

The next celebrity perfume? Marilyn Manson plans to launch his first scent next year…

Perfume reading

There is an article in today's New York Times about CB I Hate Perfume.

CB OUTSIDE

Posted by Robin on 30 June 2005 13 Comments

CB OUTSIDE, from CB I Hate Perfume, is like a cross between a perfume and a bug repellent. It is made from plant oils that bugs don't like, including cedar, lavender, geranium, and marigold, and can be used on skin or clothing. If you are the camping type, you can also use it on your tent or sleeping bag.

This is a great idea for a natural alternative to DEET-based products, but since it isn't yet high bug season here, I can't really comment on how well it works. Your reaction to the smell will probably be determined by how much you like the predominant notes. I love cedar but don't much care for lavender. The lavender here is not overly sharp or harsh, and is softened by the geranium and marigold, so I find the aroma pleasant, but it isn't necessarily something I would wear for the fragrance alone.

I will be testing this out over the course of the summer, and will report back on how well it works. OUTSIDE has a nice, light, non-greasy consistency.
