A Lab on Fire Liquidnight ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 15 August 2014 8 Comments

A Lab on Fire Liquidnight and Carlos Benaïm

I’m slowly but surely catching up with A Lab On Fire, a New York-based “niche” line that hasn’t always been easy to find, even in New York. Liquidnight, developed by perfumer Carlos Benaïm, was released in 2012. It was inspired by “the hidden depth of the night in New York City” and it includes notes of bergamot, lime, saffron, sage, lavender, hinoki wood, incense, vanilla and musk.

I wanted to try Liquidnight because I’m very fond of some other fragrances from this line…

Frederic Malle Eau de Magnolia ~ fragrance review

magnolia

The (elusive) scent of magnolia has received lots of attention this year from perfumers. I’ve already reviewed Grandiflora’s two magnolia offerings by Michel Roudnitska and Sandrine Videault, and now comes Frédéric Malle and perfumer Carlos Benaïm with Eau de Magnolia.1

Benaïm has already created scented products for Malle based on magnolia: the Jurassic Flower candle, room spray and rubber incense. I went to the Frédéric Malle boutique at Barneys to get a whiff of Jurassic Flower but became sidetracked, and nasally exhausted, by the zillion candles that were calling out to me, not only from Malle’s line, but from Cire Trudon, too. Jurassic Flower smelled great, if not very “magnolia-ish…”

Maison Martin Margiela Replica Lazy Sunday Morning & Promenade in the Gardens ~ fragrance reviews

Maison Martin Margiela Replica Lazy Sunday Morning & Promenade in the Gardens, brand visuals

Last month I reviewed three fragrances from the Maison Martin Margiela Replica fragrance collection: Flower Market, Beach Walk and Funfair Evening. This week I tested two more, Lazy Sunday Morning and Promenade in the Gardens.

Lazy Sunday Morning, developed by perfumer Louise Turner, is meant to suggest “silky skin, crumpled linen sheets and the reassuring scent of fresh laundry” in “Florence, 2003.” Its notes include aldehydes, pear accord, lily of the valley accord; iris accord, rose absolue [sic], orange flower accord; white musk accord, Indonesian patchouli oil and ambrette seeds absolute. Leaving aside the question of why Florence was chosen as the “location” for this perfume, how does Lazy Sunday Morning function as a “fresh and clean” fragrance?

Not very well, I don’t think…
