Home fragrance review ~ Aveda Shampure candle

Posted by Kevin on 8 August 2006 2 Comments

Aveda Shampure fragrance candleHow often does the fragrance of a shampoo lead to product offshoots? Shampure shampoo is one of Aveda’s best-selling and most lauded products and its success led to the creation of the Shampure candle.

I’ve used Shampure shampoo for years. Though I love the shampoo’s mildness and effect on my hair, it’s the fragrance of the shampoo that keeps me buying. Aveda uses natural oils and essences in its products and Shampure’s fragrance is a combination of over 25 pure flower and plant essences, including: lavender, ylang-ylang, bergamot, rosemary, peppermint, and orange. Of these notes, ylang-ylang stands out…

Home fragrance: Provencal Honey candle by Votivo

Posted by Kevin on 1 July 2006 9 Comments

Votivo Provencal Honey fragrance candleI hate hot weather. When it’s over 80 degrees, I do not discuss: the books I’ve recently read, music, films, politics. I don’t even have the will to gossip. Instead, I say things like: “What’s the heat index today…it feels hotter than 82!” “Did you happen to hear what the low temperature will be tonight?” “What’s the five-day forecast?” or, simply, “I’M HOT!” If I see a candle burning during summer, I cringe and am convinced the heat emanating from the flickering flame is making the temperature rise.

In hot weather, complexity of any type can be taxing, especially in perfumed products, so light, simple fragrances are perfect for the dog days. Votivo Ltd.’s French Collection Provencal Honey candle releases a calming steady stream of pure honey/beeswax scent into the air — even when unlit. Votivo’s candles are so fragrant that one can enjoy them without striking a match…

Home fragrance: Claus Porto Voga (Acacia Tuberose) candle

Posted by Victoria on 21 June 2006 2 Comments

Claus Porto Voga fragrance candleThe white clusters of acacia flowers redolent of jasmine and orange blossom with a touch of coconut lend themselves to being reproduced in a perfume. For the time being, I am happy to discover it in a candle form. The black wax of Claus Porto Voga is saturated with this magnificent aroma that is reminiscent of late spring when the tall trees covered with feathered leaves suddenly blossom, only to lose their finery a few days later in a white, fragrant rainfall. The rich scent of the Voga candle conjures my walks through the acacia-lined streets in the city where I grew up…

Nile Lily candle by Pacifica ~ home fragrance report

Posted by Kevin on 6 May 2006 11 Comments

Pacifica Nile Lily candlePacifica was founded in Portland, Oregon in 1995. I became acquainted with the company through their glycerin soaps (there are always bars of Pacifica Tunisian Jasmine and Sandalwood in my bathroom). A single bar of Pacifica soap easily perfumes a large room.

The scents of Pacifica’s candles are also robust. The hand-poured candles are made in small batches in two formulations: food-grade paraffin or vegetable-based soy wax. Both versions have lead-free cotton wicks. Nile Lily (made with dark red wax) contains notes of white flowers, saffron, lotus and lily. My first reaction to Nile Lily (unlit) was: “gardenia.” The gardenia note hovers in the air during the burn and is joined by what smells like faint tuberose. Gradually, the lily and lotus emerge, with a hint of “background” saffron. As I burned this candle through the winter months it brought to mind warm, humid days and a lush flower-filled water garden…no small feat…
