Kobo's soy candles come in a plantable box embedded with seeds: soak it, put it in dirt, get a plant to go with your candle. In scents like Wild Tomato Vine, Heath Lavender, Fresh Cut Grass, Somerset Thyme, Siam Poppy, Crushed Mint, Catalan Calendula and Sweet Sunflower. $28 each at Burke Decor or Smallflower.

Wine in hand

Since opening in early March, Wax & Wine has hosted two bridal showers and a few birthday and just-because gatherings. You can walk in and  make a candle, or you can rent out the back room for a party. It costs $30 to make one eight-ounce candle ($45 for two and $50 for three),  about the same it costs to buy a 14-ounce Yankee Candle.

On a recent evening, 12 women in their late 20s and early 30s arrived at Wax & Wine, wearing long coats, long hair, and with wine in hand.

— Anyone else remember those DIY fragrance blending bars at Garden Botanika? (I think they all closed in 2001.) What they were missing was wine. Read more about the DIY candles at Philadelphia's Wax & Wine in How your nose might lead you to your next girl's night out.

Flowers + food, from Voluspa. Candles in Violet & Honey ("The Macaron collection features glass textured with a soft swirl pattern colored to match the cookie that inspired it. Violet & Honey is a fresh scent with notes of sweet crème lavender honey and sugared violet petals.") and Rose Petal Ice Cream ("This candle is presented in a textured glass vessel with a classic geometric 3D cube pattern and is colored to match the rose that served as fragrance and packaging inspiration. The fruity, floral scent features notes of vanilla bean ice cream, tart raspberry ribbon, marshmallow vanilla crème and sugared rose petals.") Both are available in 4 sizes ($13–$40) at Nordstrom.

From Illume, the Thai Lily Ceramic Flower Candle: "We designed our new Thai Lily ceramic flower candle to layer life and beauty into our Essentials collection. Exotic citrus notes of Bali mango, blood orange and white nectarine are deliciously blended with Brazilian teak and Asiatic lily, and finished with a hint of sensual musk." 15 hour burn time, which is not much, but the $26 price isn't outrageous either. At Lord & Taylor, where you can also get 15% off with the coupon code ANNIVERSARY.
