The not-quite-daily lemming

Bananas! From Wary Meyers: "The scent of bananas when they’re at their perfectly ripest - not green, not mushy, but how you’d think bananas smell when you see a picture of a giant bunch of them at a fruit market in the sun-drenched tropics. Or picture you just lopped of [sic] a bunch from a banana palm to use as a pillow as you fall asleep on a hot exotic beach. How this translates to your living room is intriguingly unexpected. Its scent is neither food nor fruit, but vibe. Adding to its unique quality, this delectable candle comes with a sheet of 14 different stickers for you to decorate your own jar." $44 at Luckyscent.

From Carrière Frères, the refillable Geranium / Pelargonium odoratissimum candle, developed in collaboration with the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris: "The scented candle is to its image: a fresh head note filled with grapefruit and hemp flowers; the head note that encapsulates the geranium’s beauty; and a base note featuring patchouli." $85 for 185g; the refill comes in a 100% compostable container and is $55.

From Lumira, the Cyprès de Provence scented candle: "LUMIRA's candle evokes a Mediterranean journey, capturing the sweet essence of Orange Blossom and the woody notes of Cypress trees lining the streets of Provence. It's blended with spicy Pink Pepper and Cardamom and balanced with a warm base of Oriental Vanilla, Cedarwood, Amber and Musk." 300g, marked down from $70 to $42 at Net-A-Porter.

This is where the story gets wild

This is where the story gets wild and touched by whatever force it is that makes life seem fated and destined to happen: please follow along. Two months earlier, a young woman in the Whitney Hotel bar near Mr. Carby’s office had begged him to tell her what scent he was wearing. He was drinking with a pal and tried to ignore her but she persisted. Michael Carby was wearing the only scent he ever wears, a musk body oil of his own creation. It’s noticeable but subtle, hard to pin down: a musky, amberish, leathery base with spicy and even tropical high notes.

— Read more (and it's a fascinating story) in Empires of wax: The story of how a Drake-scented candle came to be is a radical tale of hard-working immigrants, entrepreneurship, upward class mobility, smashed racial stereotypes and a massive whack of luck at The Globe and Mail.

Basically if Cire Trudon makes something new, I want it. Here is Tuileries, celebrating Trudon's 380th anniversary. "The Tuileries collection finds its inspiration in a rare document kept at the French National Archives: the Gazette des Atours de la Reine. In what seems like an ordinary notebook, countess Geneviève d’Ossun – a French courtier who served as lady-in-waiting and first maid of honor to Marie Antoinette – gathered many fabric samples used to tailor the sovereigns’ many dresses and royal outfits. The fragrance was conceived as an homage to the rose, the Queen’s favorite flower throughout her life." Additional notes for the fruity floral chypre include pink pepper, blackcurrant, mandarin, white flowers, raspberry, geranium, musk, patchouli, sandalwood and vanilla. Candles in 4 sizes ($55 - $690) or diffuser ($250), at Trudon.
