Ways to make your candle-buying habits more eco-friendly

Posted by Robin on 7 September 2023 Leave a Comment

If tossing bits of spent candles makes you feel guilty, there are ways to make your candle-buying habits more eco-friendly, like avoiding petroleum-based paraffins in favor of beeswax or soy, which have lower carbon footprints. But you can go one step further by recycling your candle scraps to make entirely new candles. The process is especially handy for making citronella candles to repel bugs naturally when you spend time outside.

The occasional lemming

Les Mondes de Diptyque, a new collection of five refillable candles. The fragrances are from perfumer Olivia Giacobetti, and I'll take any or all: La Forêt Rêve (mauve, a "fantastical forest" in the "Mexican jungle"; with tuberose, ylang ylang, jasmine, vanilla and galbanum); La Vallée du Temps (smoke/white, "Jingdezhen....cradle of Chinese porcelain, also famous for its white tea", with white tea, maté and jasmine); Nymphées Merveilles (blue/gray, "gardens of the Renaissance", with orange blossom, jasmine and iris); Temple des Mousses (green, "a Japanese Zen garden...not far from Kyoto", with moss, cedar and matcha); Terres Blondes (terracotta, "Mesa Verde. On the high plateaux of Colorado", with wheat bran, red cedar and burnt earth). The 270g candles are $285 each, the refills are $135. You can find them now at Saks.

Sure, I'll take one. Diptyque celebrates the 60th anniversary of their candle line with "the 49 nuances of our herbarium of scents in a limited-edition box". 13 were made, $3500 each.

Striking, with a price to match: the new candle collection from Alexander McQueen. Shown is Pagan Rose ("The Pagan Rose candle is based around the tension between fragile wild rose and earthy peat. The scented candle comes in a vessel made of black lacquered glass and a shiny gunmetal metal lid, coming together to create a final organic and architectural form. A blend of black mineral waxes and rapeseed wax is presented in a fully recyclable wooden crate"; the notes also include cognac) 200g for $395 at Alexander McQueen.

More bananas! "Boy Smells introduces Banana Pudding, a candle fragrance that transports you to the West Village — home of the original Magnolia Bakery. You’ve wandered onto the corner of Bleecker and West 11th and are overcome by the wafting smells from the Magnolia Bakery mingling with fresh cardamom and strong smoked guaiac wood that are both nostalgic and indulgent, enveloping you like a big hug." $48 for 240g at Magnolia Bakery or Boy Smells.
