Marc Jacobs Lola fragrance

Marc Jacobs will follow the very successful Daisy fragrance with the “more sensual” Lola, Daisy’s “confident and slightly vampy older sister”. Lola will launch in August.

Vera Wang Rock Princess ~ perfume review

Vera Wang Rock Princess perfume bottleVera Wang Rock Princess fragrance advert

Vera Wang’s little Princess has grown up — a bit:

She’d trade her tiara in for a new guitar, attend a concert instead of the prom. Introducing Rock Princess, the daring new fragrance from Vera Wang. The fragrance is a dark, fruity floral with sultry attitude and modern style. It is edgy, but seductively sweet. Vera Wang Rock Princess – the music, the spirit, the new fragrance!*

Rock Princess is the second flanker to 2006’s Princess (it follows last year’s Flower Princess), and as you can see from the ad copy, it’s geared towards a slightly older audience, presumably one that has a later bedtime.

The juice has been tweaked to match. It’s still a fruity floral, but as advertised, it’s darker…

By Kilian Prelude to Love ~ (slightly cranky) perfume review

Posted by Robin on 6 October 2008 43 Comments

By Kilian Prelude to Love fragrance bottle

I’ve had mixed feelings so far about the By Kilian line. All 6 of the original scents that debuted in 2007 are nicely done, if perhaps no match for the swollen rhetoric of the ad copy, but as I’ve said before, ultra-luxe trappings don’t endear me to a brand. When the prices range from $225 for a refillable 50 ml bottle* nestled in a lacquered box complete with lock and key to $2500 for a 1 liter perfume fountain, I’m prone to roll my eyes. My perfume cabinet is chock-full of masterpieces (and many of them in far handsomer bottles than this one), and I’ve yet to top $200 for a single bottle purchase.

The latest By Kilian fragrance, Prelude to Love, is a unisex, and like the others in the line, is introduced with great fanfare…

Calvin Klein Secret Obsession ~ perfume review

Posted by Robin on 3 September 2008 85 Comments

Eva Mendes for Calvin Klein Secret Obsession

1985’s Obsession, from Calvin Klein, was meant to capture the “essence of the 1980’s obsession with carnal and material gratification”; Secret Obsession, the brand’s latest feminine fragrance, hopes to update that notion for modern times, to “become the meaning of what is sexy today — more personal, sophisticated and intoxicating”.* If Secret Obsession fails in that mission it won’t be the fault of Eva Mendes, who gamely writhes and moans in (presumably) perfumed ecstasy, and shows just enough nipple to get the advertising spot banned from television, thus ensuring that a bajillion people will watch it on YouTube at no expense whatsoever to Coty…
