Serge Lutens Five O’Clock Au Gingembre & Bvlgari Blv Pour Homme ~ fragrance reviews

Posted by Kevin on 2 July 2008 4 Comments

Getting to know civet as a fragrance note can make you gag. Put some costus roots under your nose one fine morn and you may skip breakfast. “Investigating” ginger, doing your ginger homework, is more pleasant: take a crisp ginger root and rub it between your fingers, bruise it with your fingernail, and inhale its lively and clean aroma (bite into the root for added credit); smell and taste yellow powdered ginger; slowly chew a piece of sticky, candied ginger; drink an old fashioned spicy ginger ale; and finally, eat a moist slice of warm gingerbread, straight from the oven, washed down with a ginger infusion, made using boiling water and sliced ginger root (sugar and milk optional). You are now ready to recognize ginger in fragrance.

Serge Lutens Five O'Clock Au Gingembre

In his Five O’Clock Au Gingembre Eau de Parfum, Serge Lutens places candied (not fresh) ginger in a tea-time setting and surrounds it with foody notes…

Bvlgari Pour Femme ~ perfume review

Bvlgari Pour Femme fragranceKate Moss for Bvlgari Pour Femme

It was interesting to read the various opinions on Bvlgari as a fragrance house in the comments to Kevin’s article about their Aqva line for men. I think of Bvlgari as one of the better mainstream brands. No, the fragrances aren’t all wildly innovative, but to my nose, they’re all (ok, mostly) so nicely done. A perfect example: Bvlgari Pour Femme.

Bvlgari launched Pour Femme in 1994. It was the line’s second fragrance, following Eau Parfumee au Thé Vert, and it was originally known just as “Bvlgari”. They introduced it slowly in the United States, restricting it initially to about 40 stores, and I can’t resist quoting this oh-if-you-only-knew statement from a Chanel representative (a Chanel subsidiary was in charge of the US distribution):

We think that things are becoming a little too fast, easy and gimmicky in the fragrance business. Perhaps the best way to cut through the clutter is to be more quiet and tasteful about a launch. (via Women’s Wear Daily, 6/17/1994)

We’ll leave aside consideration of how well a “quiet and tasteful” launch would work in 2008…

Bvlgari Aqva Pour Homme & Aqva Pour Homme Marine ~ fragrance reviews

Bvlgari Aqva Pour Homme fragrance ad

Bvlgari Aqva Pour Homme and Aqva Pour Homme Marine, both created by perfumer Jacques Cavallier, are classified as aromatic aquatic fragrances, “designed to evoke the natural freshness and vitality of the ocean.” We’ve all encountered fragrances or perfume notes that claim to capture the scents of clouds, sun, snow, mountain air, deserts, or beaches. I admit to being susceptible to such perfumes because my imagination can ‘fill in the blanks.’ If a perfumer presents me with “Snow” (or more likely, La Neige) — she can bottle some pine needle and cedar wood oils, incense/smoke notes, and a “cold, damp mineral” accord and I will create a snow scene in my mind (a snug cabin, or chalet, located in wintry mountains, its lopsided chimney releasing swirls of sweet wood smoke that creates a lavender-colored haze around snow-capped evergreen trees and boulders) that can accommodate her perfume idea. But that scene doesn’t really smell of actual snow (ice crystals) does it?

Imagine the perfume possibilities when trying to re-create the smell of water…
