Aedes de Venustas ~ shopping for perfume in New York City

Posted by Guest Shopper on 12 December 2009 — 0 Comments — Comments are closed

Aedes de Venustas, store interior

It’s hard to find something to say about Aedes de Venustas that hasn’t been said many times before. Ever since this West Village business opened in 1995, it has been the subject of countless glowing reviews that heap praise upon its merchandise, its décor, its customer service, its discerning clientele, and its indefinable mystique. The thing is, Aedes actually deserves all the accolades it has received over the years. Its selection of high-quality fragrances includes full lines (Serge Lutens, Etro, Diptyque) and one-offs (such as Shalini or the signature scent of the Hotel Costes), as well as brands that you won’t find anywhere else in New York (Amouage). Its extensive assortment of home fragrance and scented body-care features products that have gained places in the “cult favorite” hall of fame: Claus Porto soaps, Agraria potpourri, Mariage Frères candles.

The boutique’s décor is detailed and lavish: antique glass-front cabinets, chandeliers, Victorian sofas, and a stuffed peacock or two…

Les Nereides ~ shopping for perfume in London

Posted by Guest Shopper on 14 November 2009 — 0 Comments — Comments are closed

ls-ext

Perfumistas are aware of Les Néréides as the house that gives us Imperial Opoponax and Patchouli Antique, among other niche favourites.

In fact, Les Néréides is actually a jewellery company, specialising in cute and unusual costume pieces. It’s quirky stuff — for example, most of their earrings are paired rather than identical — a parrot in one ear and a gilded cage in the other, for example. I doubt if any woman could walk past the window of the Covent Garden shop and not stop and squeal with delight…

Malin + Goetz ~ shopping for perfume in New York City

Posted by Guest Shopper on 25 October 2009 — 0 Comments — Comments are closed

Malin + Goetz store in Chelsea

The Malin + Goetz storefront in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood originally served as the company’s all-inclusive headquarters: boutique, offices, showroom, and e-commerce shipping center. Last year, staff operations relocated to a nearby address, and the shop itself expanded to fill the rear area of the interior. (Malin + Goetz also recently opened a second Manhattan location at 455 Amsterdam Avenue, spreading its influence to the Upper West Side.)

When you enter Malin + Goetz, you may find yourself happily dazed by the gleaming white interior of the company’s “apothecary” area, where precisely arranged rows of products for skin, hair, and body are displayed in open shelves. Testers are available, and a friendly young sales assistant will be able to help you in selecting a few items. You’ll also notice a few imaginative touches placed amongst the merchandise, like antique apothecary jars and dog figurines — as well as the owners’ two real dogs, who often spend time in the shop…

Le Labo ~ shopping for perfume in Tokyo

Posted by Guest Shopper on 18 October 2009 — 0 Comments — Comments are closed

Le Labo Tokyo store, interiorLe Labo Tokyo store, interior

Tokyo is not a perfume-mad city. You won’t catch whiffs of elusive scents as you go travel the Metro system; in the department stores you’ll struggle to find more than the mainstream Chanels and Guerlains, with a small corner set aside for a selection of other, well-known scents.

Given Tokyo’s lack of enthusiasm for fragrance, Le Labo’s decision to open a boutique seems brave to the point of madness. However, they’re hoping to persuade the Japanese that scent can be fascinating, and the area they’ve chosen for their store — Daikanyama — is one of the most chic and boho areas of the city. It’s a place full of small, uber-trendy shops and restaurants, the kind of place you’d find Sienna Miller shopping for clothes. In the south-western part of the city, it’s the place where many foreign embassies are located…
