Balenciaga Paris ~ perfume review

Posted by Robin on 12 February 2010 184 Comments

Balenciaga Paris fragrance advert 2010

Balenciaga Paris is the latest fragrance from Balenciaga. It’s the brand’s first major launch since Cristobal in 1998, the first effort under new licensing arrangements with Coty, and the first under creative director Nicolas Ghesquière. It’s fronted by Charlotte Gainsbourg, who is frequently described as Ghesquière’s muse (see the very low-key Gainsbourg ad here). Perfumer Olivier Polge characterized the floral chypre as “present” — “It’s here. When you wear it. You smell it.”1

That might sound a little oblique, but it turns out to be a fitting description: when I first tried Balenciaga Paris on paper, my reaction was muted, and it wasn’t until I’d worn it on skin several times that I began to see what he meant. Celebrity fragrance news: Kim Kardashian, Charlotte Gainsbourg…

Posted by Robin on 29 August 2009 31 Comments

Kim Kardashian’s debut scent will reportedly launch next spring, under licensing arrangements with Lighthouse Beauty (they’re also doing Power by 50 Cent). Last year she said she was working with perfumer Caroline Sabas, but I don’t know anything else about the perfume itself. According to Kardashian, the fragrance “really captures” who she is. Balenciaga Le Dix ~ perfume review

Balenciaga Le Dix parfum advert

If Chanel No. 5 is Marilyn Monroe and Lanvin Arpège is Norma Shearer, then Balenciaga Le Dix is Gene Tierney: fresh, crisp, beautiful, and down-to-earth. Le Dix is the aldehydic floral that goes out to lunch on a weekday for lots of clever conversation but not an inappropriate amount of intrigue or cleavage.

Le Dix was created in 1947 and is named after the street address of Balenciaga’s fashion house in Paris…
