Scented advent calendars 2017, part 1

Posted by Robin on 13 October 2017 9 Comments

With the usual apologies for holiday creep, I’m starting our yearly roundup of advent calendars now, since they tend to launch early and then sell out quickly. If you want one, buy it soon. Part 2 will be coming up later this month. (Please note that some of these calendars are not available in the US. Advent calendars are more popular in the UK than in the US).

Diptyque’s 2017 Advent is out at Selfridges: “Make this year’s countdown to Christmas the most special yet with the anticipated Advent Calendar from Diptyque. Housing 25 little treasures to discover before the big day, it brings together the label’s beloved products in a unique discovery format. Look forward to a selection of cute miniatures including 10ml Vinaigre de Toilette, deluxe 15ml skin and body care, mini-candles in 35g format and a 70g candle make every day a celebration.” £300. (Most years, this ends up in the US as well but sells out fast…)

Atelier Cologne hand cream trio

A trio of Atelier Cologne hand creams ("Natural essential oils along with apricot kernel oil and vitamins A and E nourish the skin. Enriched with 8% shea butter, this creamy balm penetrates quickly to moisturize and protect hands. The rich texture leaves hands soft and delicately scented without feeling greasy. You can use Atelier Cologne hand cream as often as necessary or desired.") in Orange Sanguine, Bergamote Soleil and Rose Anonyme, $75 at Neiman Marcus. Or, you can buy them separately for $25 a tube at Nordstrom, where they also have my preference, Pomélo Paradis.

Atelier Cologne Oolang Infini

I have a love-hate relationship with cologne. I love the idea of the clap of a tart, citrusy cologne and how it wakes you as surely as jumping into a swimming pool. I love the luxurious ritual of a splash of cologne between shower and dress. In Perfumes: the A to Z Guide, Luca Turin summarizes it well:

A good cologne is the perfumery equivalent of a postconcert encore: brief, familiar to the entire audience, which sighs with pleasure when hearing the first notes; and completely devoid of any ambition beyond transient joy. It is also one of life’s absolute necessities, perfume for when you don’t feel like perfume, before going to bed, to splash on your kids after the bath and introduce them to life’s finer pleasures, etc. In short, cologne is a cleanser for the soul.1

How could you not want some of that…
