Better and more accurately than humans

Posted by Robin on 2 September 2023 3 Comments

Researchers at Monell and Google-backed olfactory AI startup Osmo have created a machine-learning model that could accurately describe the smells of chemicals by their molecules. The team found that the AI could also describe the scents better and more accurately than humans. This breakthrough, detailed in the journal Science on Thursday, is a major step forward in the quest to digitize smells.

New scent molecules

"I am thrilled to be joining the Osmo team building the world's first AI platform for scent molecule discovery," said Laudamiel. "The fragrance industry has mastered complex plant extractions, scent chemistries, and manufacturing at scale. But when it comes to discovering new scent molecules , there is a new opportunity to explore the billions of untapped molecules that human noses cannot screen on their own."

A robot to smell odors using a biological sensor

Posted by Robin on 25 April 2023 Leave a Comment

Airports and train stations all over the world may soon switch out drug-sniffing dogs for their not nearly as cuddly robotic counterparts. A technological breakthrough by a team at Tel Aviv University has made it possible, for the first time ever, for a robot to smell odors using a biological sensor. The sensor works by sending electrical signals as a response to the presence of a nearby odor, which the robot can then go on to detect and interpret.

The lingering scent of a passenger’s tuna sandwich

An AI-powered nose could help robotaxi operators sniff out problematic odors — like the lingering scent of a passenger's tuna sandwich — and reroute the vehicle to a maintenance hub for cleaning before its next ride.

The authentic recognition of an odor

Posted by Robin on 20 August 2021 2 Comments

The difference with Koniku’s “camera” is that the purple encasement contains tiny living nerve cells. They’re suspended inside a proprietary solution designed to replicate the mucosa, the layer of membrane high up in our nasal cavities. The cells contain specific transmembrane proteins programmed to recognize odor molecules, precisely as those in our nose would catch a whiff. The reaction triggers a cascade of signaling events, eventually leading to a chip reader that interprets which receptors were triggered. And there you have it: the authentic recognition of an odor.
