From the Life Elixirs aromatherapy range at Elemis, Clarity Bath and Shower Elixir: "This invigorating bath and shower elixir is scientifically formulated with 8 pure essential oils, including Bitter Orange and Cardamom, in a skin conditioning base of Amaranth and Bacuri oil. Leaves the skin beautifully scented and moisturised." Also available in Calm (rosewood, clary sage and lavender), Fortitude (ylang, cedar and geranium), Embrace (vetiver and frankincense) and Sleep (patchouli and elemi). The products also come in candles and perfume oils. At Elemis in the UK (but not, at the moment, in the US).

I'll take 10, please: Origins Peace of Mind On-the-Spot Relief Rollerball. "A limited-edition mind-clearing rollerball that brings positive peace, joy and calm. The refreshing scent-sation relieves stress instantly and goes everywhere you do." No details on the fragrance, but it apparently has lots of peppermint. $35 for 15 ml at Nordstrom.

Between a perfume and a potion

Oils are touted as something between a perfume and a potion, a substance that can keep you smelling nice while also providing physical and psychological benefits. They are often stocked on the same shelves as herbal remedies such as echinacea and St.-John’s-wort; big-box stores sell aromatherapy diffusers as an alternative to synthetic-smelling products like Febreze. The model Miranda Kerr used oils to help her get over her breakup with Orlando Bloom. The pop star Kesha tweeted that she starts off every day by sniffing essential oils: “They make me feel so peaceful.”
