Burberry Brit Rhythm for Her ~ perfume review

Posted by Robin on 25 February 2014 31 Comments

Burberry Brit Rhythm for Women

So, Burberry as a fragrance house, yay or meh or nay? I’ve been mostly in the meh camp. The original Burberry Brit was a fun, pear-based fruity floral before pear became so annoyingly ubiquitous, and although it wasn’t my thing, I thought a couple of the flankers (particularly Brit Red and Brit Gold) were pretty good. The Beat was ok, although I thought the limited edition Beat Elixir version was so much better that I didn’t see why it wasn’t released as the “main” fragrance (it’s the only Burberry fragrance I own, and I still wear it from time to time). I did not much care for Burberry London, and ditto for Burberry Body.

All of which might explain why I did not have especially high hopes for Burberry Brit Rhythm for Her. It didn’t help that Kevin was not enthralled with the men’s version (I didn’t get around to smelling it, but we agree more often than not). And the rock music inspiration / backstory, hey, that’s getting a little old, isn’t it?1 The Beat hardly lived up to its ‘edgy, carnal, slightly wild’ musical inspirations, and I rather doubted Brit Rhythm for Her would live up to this number…

Burberry Brit Rhythm for Women

Burberry will launch Burberry Brit Rhythm for Women in January. It is described as having “a rock ’n’ roll edge” with “powdery softness”…

Comme des Garcons + Monocle Scent Three: Sugi ~ fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 14 November 2013 31 Comments

Comme des Garçons + Monocle Scent Three: Sugi

I’ve complained already about the recent output from Comme des Garçons — they’ve become a kind of go-to house for variations, sometimes minor variations, on wood and/or incense.1 Mind you, they know how to do wood and/or incense, and in all truth, when they do break out of that rut, I don’t always like the result.2 So I have mixed feelings about their most recent launch, Scent Three: Sugi. It’s their third fragrance in collaboration with Monocle magazine (see Scent One: Hinoki and Scent Two: Laurel), and like the others, was developed by perfumer Antoine Maisondieu. And I do love it. It’s beautifully done, and I’d very much like to have a bottle — please, Santa, send the other two Monocle fragrances while you’re at it! — but unless you have the sort of never-ending interest in woody fragrances (and Comme des Garçons) that I do, you might not find it an absolute must-try.

I’ll start by repeating the press stuff, because it’s spot on…
