Male spiders “smell” with their legs

Posted by Robin on 14 January 2025 2 Comments

Most spiders have eight legs, no ears and use fine leg hairs connected to nerve cells or their webs to hear sounds in their environment. But how do they smell?

A new study by an international team of researchers has found that male spiders “smell” with their legs, using olfactory hairs — wall-pore sensilla — as their “nose” to detect sex pheromones released by females.

An aroma that can be quite pleasant

The first sign of an attack is usually a smell, an aroma that can be quite pleasant, like a freshly cut Christmas tree. It emanates from some of the deepest swamps and most hidden recesses of Minnesota’s forests. But along with that aroma, there is something else in the air, something sweet to a destructive type of bark beetle. It’s a trail of pheromones signaling that it is time to feast.

Scientists at the University of Minnesota have identified the chemicals and compounds that eastern larch beetles produce to communicate with one other.

Heat waves

Posted by Robin on 11 September 2024 2 Comments

The heat waves reduced the strength of the neurons’ electrical signal by up to 80 percent; workers, which are all female and forage for the hive, were more affected than males. Even worse, the antennae of the bees that had 24 hours to cool off still hadn’t recovered their sense of smell after that time. “That was surprising,” Nooten says. The team had expected those antennae to recover. The fact that they didn’t, she says, suggests the bees don’t recover swiftly, which spells trouble for getting food for the colony.

The bees could successfully tell the difference

In a separate experiment, Saha’s team collected air lingering above lung cells grown in the lab. The bees could successfully tell the difference between air samples taken near healthy cells and those gathered near cells of two cancer types: small-cell lung cancer and non-small cell lung cancer.

Complex odor processing

Posted by Robin on 19 June 2024 2 Comments

Unlike other insects, migratory locusts have over 2,000 glomeruli in their antennal lobe, compared to 20-300 in most insects. This distinctive feature enables complex odor processing in the locusts, crucial for their behavior and swarming.
