It is hard to describe the general odor

Posted by Robin on 28 September 2019 7 Comments

“The chemical blend may make the scent differ between types of insect, so it is hard to describe the general odor, but it is an acrid but somewhat sweet smell,” says Bertone. “I liken it to a very sour, fermenting apple, but other people detect other odors.” On the flip side, Gore says “most people describe it as a peppery odor, similar to coriander or cilantro.” (That’s because one of the compounds produced by stink bugs can actually be found in cilantro.)

Serving up surprises

But these supersized snoots are constantly serving up surprises—and a group of researchers has now discovered that they’re discerning enough to distinguish more from less. Their study, published today in the journal PNAS, suggests elephants can use scent alone to differentiate between quantities of sunflower seeds that might flummox even the most hawk-eyed of humans.

An unfortunate consequence of a big positive

Posted by Robin on 2 May 2019 2 Comments

Biologists say the odor is an unfortunate consequence of a big positive: Environmental protections put in place over the past few decades have brought back the cormorants and brown pelicans that nearly went extinct in the 1970s due to the pesticide DDT, as well as the seals and sea lions which, although never endangered, were depleted in number.

Smelly chemicals in our sweat

Posted by Robin on 29 March 2019 4 Comments

Mosquitoes searching for a meal of blood use a variety of clues to track down humans, including our body heat and the carbon dioxide in our breath. Now, research shows that a certain olfactory receptor in their antennae also serves as a detector of humans, responding to smelly chemicals in our sweat.

The perception of pleasant smells

Posted by Robin on 18 March 2019 Leave a Comment

Scientists have discovered that repellent odors suppress the perception of pleasant smells. This happens because certain brain structures that respond to attractive odors are inhibited by a repellent one.
