Versace Versense ~ perfume review

Posted by Robin on 21 April 2009 92 Comments

Versace Versense fragrance for women

Versense is the latest fragrance for women from Versace, and as I posted last month, it promises to highlight notes from the Mediterranean and to “perfectly interpret the contrast between freshness and sexiness”. Donatella Versace elaborated on the theme:

Versense perfectly represents the Versace woman. I created a fragrance to make her feel incredibly lighter. There’s something very optimistic and confident about being free, and it was that feeling that I tried to capture for Versense. (via Women’s Wear Daily, 3/20/2009)

If lighter and fresher is what you’re after, Versense might just fit the bill. Like yesterday’s Essence by Narciso Rodriguez, Versense was developed by perfumer Alberto Morillas, and like Essence, Versense opens whistling-clean. The early stages are crisp, green, lemon-lime-y and fresh, with the emphasis on the fresh…

Narciso Rodriguez Essence ~ fragrance review

Posted by Angela on 20 April 2009 125 Comments

Narciso Rodriguez Essence perfume advert

The Rodriguez press machine describes Narciso Rodriguez Essence Eau de Parfum as a “floral powdery musk” with iris, rose, benzoin, amber, and musk notes. It is marketed as a daytime scent that is both clean, like “liquid sunshine”, and sexy. Superstar perfumer Alberto Morillas created it. The sales associate who gave me a sample of it said that in her training on Essence, she learned that unlike some brands that target their scent to a targeted slice of perfume buyers, Essence is suitable scent for everyone from teens to senior citizens.

So, what kind of fragrance is sexy and clean and suitable for you, your niece, and your grandma? The answer: a scent that smells like a hot steam iron pressing a linen dress that had been stored with a sachet of dried flower petals. Essence smells of the metal of the iron, the steam, and the distant impression of a jumble of flowers too mixed to pick out just one.

For a while this is perfect, especially if a whistling-clean fragrance is what suits you…

Donna Karan DKNY Men ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 2 April 2009 36 Comments

Donna Karan DKNY Men 2009 fragrance

We are living in the age of Queen Melon (née Calone) and King Violet Leaf; those two notes are dominating so many releases of the last year and a half that when I smell those notes in a fragrance I lose interest almost immediately. I don’t dislike melon and violet leaf, but smelling them in fragrance after fragrance over a long period of time has dulled their effect on me. So here comes Donna Karan’s DKNY Men (late to the violet leaf party) lagging behind other recent violet leaf-heavy scents such as Narciso Rodriguez For Him, Dsquared2 He Wood, Gucci by Gucci Pour Homme and Burberry The Beat For Men (to name just a few).

DKNY Men was created by perfumers Alberto Morillas and Harry Fremont and contains bergamot, mandarin, juniper, sage, white pepper, cardamom, lavender, violet leaf, jasmine, cedar, patchouli, orris and vetiver. DKNY Men opens with warm bergamot, violet leaf, and a touch of mandarin. The fragrance does not change much after the first few minutes on skin, and as the fragrance dries down, it resembles a slightly happier Burberry The Beat for Men…
