5 perfumes ~ vanilla fragrances for summer

Posted by Robin on 2 August 2018 37 Comments

I should have written this post weeks ago, when we had a brief period of glorious summer weather. Other than that, it’s been a rather odd summer, weather-wise, after a rather odd spring. At the moment, we’re having the usual heat and humidity you’d expect in August, but far more gray, gloomy days than usual for this time of year, and we seem to be on a daily thunderstorm schedule. But onward and upward: this is the last of my seasonal vanilla posts, since I’ve already done fall, winter and spring. As always, do chime in with your own picks in the comments!

Diptyque Eau Duelle: The vanilla martini top notes are perfect, and even though I don’t love the dry down (a quiet hum of tea and spice) quite as well, Eau Duelle would be my first choice for a vanilla that can take the heat of high summer…

5 perfumes ~ vanilla fragrances for spring

Posted by Robin on 11 May 2018 30 Comments

It’s been a very odd spring in my little corner of Pennsylvania: first way too cold, then way too hot, and only just recently approaching the happy sort of spring temperatures I look forward to all winter. That’s probably made it a little easier to think about which vanilla perfumes might work best for the gamut of spring weather (I’ve already covered fall and winter). 5 Perfumes: Orange Blossom

Posted by Angela on 26 March 2018 98 Comments

I once heard perfumer Thomas Fontaine say he considered orange blossom an American note. (Iris and galbanum were French, he said.) Right away, I thought of bars of soap, brides, and piles of white laundered towels. Is that what Americans are about — cleanliness and innocence? Maybe I should have asked, is that what orange blossom is about?

Orange blossom is a lot more expressive than its association with laundry detergent would have you believe. Here are five relatively easy-to-find1 orange blossom-centered fragrances that explore a variety of non-Girl Scout takes on the note:

Serge Lutens Fleurs d’Oranger: Fleurs d’Oranger kicks off as bright and juicy as a grove of Florida Ambersweets in spring…

vanilla beans

Brrr! This winter has outdone itself already, and it’s only mid-January. I started my year of vanilla last fall, and today I’ve got five suggestions for vanilla perfumes to keep you cozy and warm while winter does its worst. And as always, do add your own picks in the comments!

Guerlain Shalimar: Duh, you knew that, right? If you’re not sure which one to buy, see Angie’s Shalimar Face-Off, and you might also consider the flanker Guerlain Shalimar Ode à la Vanille…

5 Perfumes: Fruity Chypres for Fall

Posted by Angela on 30 October 2017 28 Comments

Peach Preserves

Autumn is the perfect time to wear a chypre perfume. Something in a chypre’s mossy, musty base echoes leaf mold and feels right at home on days with cold mornings and sunny afternoons. Among chypres, fruity chypres are especially nice. The fruit adds sweetness and color — so nice on a rainy day — without going all pumpkin spice.

Here are five fruity chypres to sample:

Guerlain Mitsouko: I’ll kick off the list with the queen of fruity chypres…
