Diptyque Pois de Senteur (Sweet Pea) candle ~ home fragrance review

Posted by Pia on 17 June 2007 2 Comments

Sweet peasDenmark and India are two very different countries. In fact, I am hard pressed to imagine two countries with less in common. This is probably why, being half Danish and half Indian, I tend to notice the very few occasions when they share something. On a recent trip to India, in the garden of the house that used to belong to my grandparents, I was enchanted to see a whole wall covered with fragrant sweet pea flowers. I was enchanted not only because of their wonderful colors and fragrance, but also because as a child spending summers in Denmark, my most vivid fragrance recollection is that of sweet peas as well. They grew profusely in my Danish grandparents' garden and thrive in the mild Danish summer climate, while limiting their life span in India to the (very) early spring before the summer heat sets in.

The warm round floral tones of sweet peas in the sun remains one of my favorite fragrances, and so I had high hopes for Diptyque's Pois de Senteur (Sweet Pea) candle…

Diptyque Figuier candle ~ home fragrance review

Diptyque Figuier candle

I first smelled Diptyque’s Figuier on a cold grey October afternoon at a friend’s weekend home, as we prepared tea and sat down for a major catch up session. I left feeling cheered by not only the conversation, but also by the lovely warm scent that had permeated the living room by the time I left.

Warmth could be seen as a contradiction in this scented candle that is described by Diptyque as coming “from the crushed leaves of the fig tree….slightly fruity, but mostly green”, but nonetheless, it is there. The same perfume essence that is used in the beloved Philosykos scent is used in this candle and it has strong notes of fig leaf sap, but I did not detect any of the cedar or musk notes found in Philosykos — this is a fairly monochromatic scent. It is touted as one of the top sellers of Diptyque’s well known candle line and I’m not surprised, as the green, slightly woody, sappy warmth is an easy going addition to any atmosphere, pleasing to both men and women…

Home Fragrance: A Farewell to Diptyque’s Roses Candle in Pink Glass

Posted by Kevin on 30 December 2006 21 Comments

Diptyque Rose candleThe year is almost over. For those lucky souls who live in the moment, or who look ahead with hope and excitement, this time of year can be joyous. I’m the sort who glances back at the about-to-end year, who thinks of the good things the year brought and the things it took away. For me, New Year’s Day is always a pensive time, but in my last post of 2006, I’d like to keep things light, or should I say pink, and eulogize a frivolous thing: a candle.

In a cursory, fifth-grade art class, my teacher asked me, out of the blue, that dull question: “Kevin, what’s your favorite color?” Always wanting to be precise, I felt time quickly pass as my mind hunted for the right answer. Was it tangerine orange? Grass green? Or the blue-purple of my nicest wool sweater? “What’s that blue called?” I thought, “Gentian?” Finally, my eyes rested on my friend Meredith’s knit cap. It was pink and I liked pink, and pink was pink, so I said, “Pink”. No one laughed, not even the boys; but the teacher said: “Pink is for girls”…

New fragrance candle from Diptyque: Opopanax Bronze

Posted by Robin on 20 October 2006 2 Comments

Diptyque Oponanax Bronze fragrance candleDiptyque has launched a limited edition holiday candle for 2006, Opopanax Bronze:

Coming from an umbelliferous plant that grows in Eastern countries, the Opopanax resin, fragrant with subtle woody notes, is burnt as an incense, just like the Myrrh. It gently diffuses its warm balsamic base mingled with the smooth and sensuous notes of vanilla.

Home fragrance report: Diptyque Lilas candle & room spray

Posted by Victoria on 23 November 2005 33 Comments

Diptyque Lilas candle

One of my quests has always been a lilac-focused fragrance that would not only capture the opulent indolic sweetness of lilac, but also display its dewy freshness. A related wish was to find a candle that would allow me to recreate the evenings spent walking through my grandmother’s garden. Overgrown with ancient lilac bushes, it would be filled with the lush intoxicating aroma emanating from the blossom studded boughs. Yet, while Frederic Malle En Passant, Jean Patou Vacances and Kenzo Summer have managed to satisfy my lilac cravings, I have been less fortunate in the home fragrance domain. Most lilac scented candles and room sprays are too similar to Glade Lilac Grove to be satisfying.

However, Diptyque Lilas is the best lilac scented candle I have discovered thus far…
