Bergamotto Marino by Gianfranco Ferre ~ fragrance review

Posted by Marlen on 16 March 2006 12 Comments

Bergamotto Marino by Gianfranco Ferre

Bergamotto Marino is a new unisex fragrance from the house of Gianfranco Ferré, intended for use as guest cosmetics by luxury hotels and for purchase by discerning customers. This Pierre Bourdon creation, housed in a Serge Mansau bottle, is highlighted by 25% Calabrian marine bergamot and blended with black currant, melon, lily of the valley, Tunisian orange blossom, Egyptian jasmine, mahogany, oakmoss, seaweed, ambergris and musk.

I’m a sucker for anything orange blossom and often find that the scent of bergamot ever-so-slightly reminds me of it. So often used as a top note, accenting the opening aroma of a thousand fragrances, in Bergamotto Marino Bourdon uses bergamot as a centerpiece, a starting point from which to introduce whispers of white florals set against a fresh marine accord of seaweed, ambergris, and musk…

David Beckham Instinct for men ~ fragrance review

Posted by Marlen on 10 March 2006 17 Comments

David Beckham fragrance advertDavid Beckham fragrance bottle

Coty has paired with superstar athlete David Beckham to produce his first men’s fragrance, Instinct. A sporty and fresh scent, Instinct was created by perfumers Alain Astori and Beatrice Piquet and has notes of bergamot, orange, mandarin, star anise, cardamom, red pimento, vetiver, patchouli and white amber.

Though I didn’t have high hopes for this one, being both a product of Coty and another “celebrity” scent, I’ll admit that it’s pleasant. Reminding me of Dior Higher Energy with main notes of citrus, vetiver and musk, Instinct opens with a rather nondescript citrus accord, sweetened by white amber. Though the olfactory notes would suggest something darker, and slightly spicy, the fragrance basically stops here, continuing on the skin as a sweet citrus. The pimento makes a brief appearance, though really doesn’t bring much to the composition other than a slightly watery green edge. The scent has very little sillage and 2 full sprays to the left arm lasted about 2 hours. I keep wondering where the patchouli and anise are, expecting this scent to take a dark turn…but to no avail…

Acqua di Biella Bursch for men ~ fragrance review

Posted by Marlen on 26 February 2006 4 Comments

Acqua di Biella Bursch

Acqua di Biella’s newest fragrance release, Bursch, is a warm and rich blend of bergamot, lemon, rhubarb, rum, incense, coriander, pepper, saffron, myrrh, cedar, vetiver, oakmoss, and musk.

Though the fragrance opens with the typical Acqua di Biella top notes of lemon and bergamot; Bursch’s middle and base notes are the real star here…

Fragrance review: Calvin Klein ck be

Posted by Marlen on 16 February 2006 6 Comments

Calvin Klein ck be, Kate Moss advert

The follow-up to Calvin Klein’s ck one, the designer’s first unisex scent, 1996’s ck be celebrates it’s 10th anniversary this year, and due to some strong word-of-mouth, I decided to give it a try. Ck be has notes of bergamot, juniper berry, mandarin, mint, lavender, magnolia, peach, amber, sandalwood, opoponax and tonka bean. Though it’s described as a musk scent, musk is not listed in the pyramid.

Ck be opens with a citrus rush of bergamot not unlike ck one. The juniper and mint add brightness and from there the scent begins to fade. The peach seems to be blended into the base and instead of creating a fruity effect, here it merely softens and adds a crispness to the tonka bean. The strength of the scent is disappointing and it took quite a few sprays to really be able to get a sense of the composition…

Fragrance review: Paul Smith London for men

Posted by Marlen on 10 February 2006 5 Comments

Paul Smith London for men

The man famous for the stripes is back with his third men’s fragrance. 2004’s Paul Smith London for men, by perfumer Antoine Lie, is an exciting and boozey mélange of sparkling green mandarin, violet flowers, shots of frosted mint, jasmine, lavender, vintage brandy accord, vetyver, Australian sandalwood, tonka beans, and amber.

Similar to both Armani’s Black Code and Lolita Lempicka’s Au Masculin, London stays in keeping with a theme popular among new fragrances recently — a velvety gourmand note in the base. My opinion: this is perhaps the best of the bunch…
