Geoffrey Beene Grey Flannel ~ fragrance review

Posted by Marlen on 26 April 2006 4 Comments

Geoffrey Beene Grey Flannel cologne

This year marks the 30th anniversary of one of the most successful men’s fragrances of the 70’s — Geoffrey Beene’s violet-tinged Grey Flannel. Released two years after my birth, Grey Flannel is an aroma that has been part of my development, always present throughout my life as a holiday gift from relatives, sitting on friend’s dressers, or displayed as testers on drugstore perfume counters. It is only now that I am also in my 30s that I have begun to appreciate what an unusual scent Grey Flannel is.

With a simple composition of violet, lemon, orange, oakmoss, sage, and sandalwood (and perhaps also cinnamon, geranium, cedar and patchouli), Grey Flannel could easily be mistaken as a Diptyque creation. Though the fragrance is not entirely a floral, the unusual violet note is the undisputed star of the olfactory pyramid…

Fragrance review: Eucris for men by Geo F Trumper

Posted by Marlen on 20 April 2006 10 Comments

Geo F Trumper Eucris fragrance

Noted as James Bond’s favorite fragrance in “Diamonds Are Forever”, Eucris has quite a pedigree. Created by the distinguished barber and perfumer Geo F Trumper, established in London in 1875, Eucris is one of the house’s classics, a warm, mossy aroma composed of blackcurrant, cumin and coriander, a heart of jasmine and muguet and base notes of sandalwood, musk and moss.

I’ve only tried this one very recently and am amazed by two facts: 1) that I could actually enjoy “this type” of fragrance, and 2) that I haven’t tried this before. What do I mean by “this type”…well, there is something very simple about the composition, but also very vintage. I tend to be drawn towards heavy, sweet and spicy, and this is none of these things. But I’ve been very pleased with how this scent wears on my skin and here’s why…

Fragrance review: Obsession Night for men by Calvin Klein

Posted by Marlen on 14 April 2006 12 Comments

Calvin Klein Obsession Night for men

Calvin Klein’s first attempt at a variation of one of his most popular men’s fragrances brings us Obsession Night for Men, a subtle new twist on an old favorite. Notes include crisp watery notes, pear, cardamom, nutmeg, suede, patchouli, vetiver, warm woods and vanilla.

Obsession Night for Men doesn’t resemble the original Obsession as much as it resembles Ferragamo for Men, but whereas Ferragamo opens with fig notes, Obsession Night offers a unique, watery pear note. It then moves on to a warm oriental base highlighted by a luxurious suede accord. The entire composition is well-blended and never really develops much…though frankly, it doesn’t have to…

Perfume review: Shiseido Rose Rouge

Posted by Marlen on 30 March 2006 7 Comments

Shiseido Rose Rouge fragrance

Shiseido’s newest creation, by perfumer Nathalie Lorson, is their first major fragrance launch for women since Vocalise in 1997 and the recent re-release of Zen in 2000. Of course it remains to be seen if this scent will cross the great divide and land at a fragrance counter near you. A fruity floral perfume focusing on Bulgarian rose, other notes include red peony, blackberry, raspberry, Morrocan rose, iris, heliotrope, velvet musk and sandalwood. I’ve heard rumors that there is also a note of cacao, but have yet to find it listed anywhere.

Rose fanatics, listen up: this is nothing new…

Shiseido for men fragrance review

Posted by Marlen on 21 March 2006 5 Comments

Shiseido for men fragranceShiseido’s newest men’s fragrance is so exclusive that it can currently only be purchased at Shiseido boutiques throughout Japan and other licensed sellers (I’ll be buying mine at Carrefour). Though the men’s skincare line is now sold around the world, and the scent of the skincare line is very similar, this Eau de Toilette is mysteriously hard-to-find. I recently asked a Shiseido representative why the fragrance hasn’t been launched worldwide. Naturally, she had no idea. An internet search shows the fragrance is available at only one Japanese cosmetics website and the mysterious notes may include (by popular opinion) bergamot, bamboo, rose, hinoki (Japanese cypress), sandalwood, fig leaf, cinnamon (spices), and musk.

The fragrance is a remarkable woody/spicy composition slightly reminiscent of Marc Jacobs for Men due to the fig leaf notes…
