Trudon Elae & Medie ~ fragrance reviews

Posted by Kevin on 25 September 2019 14 Comments

Cire Trudon, one of my favorite candle-makers, has released two new perfumes: Elae and Médie (both by perfumer Yann Vasnier). Of Trudon’s first round of five perfumes, I liked two and loved one: Olim.

Elae
(bergamot, apple, neroli, ylang-ylang, jasmine, tuberose, sandalwood, akigalawood, benzoin); 100 ml Eau de Parfum, $210

Elae begins with bergamot, sweet jasmine, tuberose and a tart “apple” aroma. Elae’s apple note has a green/unripe character. This fruity note also reminds me of young pineapple (at low volume) and the scent of those hard-as-rocks strawberries that ship from California all year…

L’Artisan Parfumeur Le Chant de Camargue ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 11 September 2019 16 Comments

In France, south of Arles, lies Camargue — a UNESCO-designated biosphere. Camargue is known for many things: its ancient-breed white horses, flamingos (and many other migrating birds), salt production, Camargue red wild rice (referenced in today’s perfume Le Chant de Camargue*) and the Course Camarguaise — Camargue’s brand of bloodless bull-fighting (or “race”). Though the stately black bulls of Camargue are individually known and are not killed in this “sport,” I can’t imagine it’s much fun to be chased, teased, enraged and prodded under a hot sun in front of thousands of screaming humans.

Bulls — one of the world’s unluckiest animals…

Penhaligon’s Castile ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 14 August 2019 26 Comments

I first smelled Penhaligon’s Castile scent when a friend who had traveled to London brought me back a box of three Castile soaps. I always chuckle (and then become wistful) when I think of Castile. The bars of soap in that gift box had been lightly nibbled by my friend’s English bulldog, Bella. When I met Bella (right before pet-sitting her), I patted her rump…which was a HUGE no-no. She raised her hackles, barked loudly and LONG — facing me, then the ceiling, then me again — and circled the room menacingly, like a boxer assessing the opponent. When she calmed down, she ignored me. She wouldn’t even take a treat from my fingers. I did not exist; I was crude and I had broken her protocols.

The early days of dog-sitting Bella were tense. When I sat in a chair or on the sofa, she would climb onto the backs of those and stare down at me…

5 perfumes: A Summer Vetiver-fest

Posted by Kevin on 31 July 2019 21 Comments

What’s more wonderful than the scent of vetiver? Of the “Fragrance Notes I Cannot Live Without”, vetiver is in the top five. I started my vetiver love affair with one of the best vetiver colognes: vintage Guerlain Vetiver (to my nose, the contemporary version is wimpy and less vetiver-y than its old self). Other vetiver fragrances that won my heart were Etro Vetiver (discontinued), Frédéric Malle Vétiver Extraordinaire, Chanel Sycomore and Maître Parfumeur et Gantier Route du Vetiver (ummm ummmm ummmmmmm). But that list is skimpy; my vetiver beaus are too numerous to list here.

In June I ordered samples of some new(ish) vetiver perfumes, hoping that one or two might inspire lust…

J-Scent Sumo Wrestler ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 24 July 2019 10 Comments

Sumo wrestlers (and samurai and geishas) all used scented hair oils to gloss and help hold their complex hairstyles in place. J-Scent (a Tokyo-based fragrance manufacturer) describes its Sumo Wrestler perfume* like this:

The scent of bintsuke (hair oil) subtly floating from dignified sumo wrestlers. Eucalyptus and anise give this perfume an aromatic scent…
