Frapin 1697 ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 14 March 2012 30 Comments

Frapin 1697

The Frapin line of fragrances has (somehow) escaped my attention; blame it on a flooded market, a lack of time and energy to find samples, or being in a perfume-induced stupor: “No more perfumes! Enough!” So: a year after its introduction, I’m finally sniffing 1697 (named after the year the Frapin family was ennobled by Louis XIV).

1697 was created by perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour and includes notes of cabreuva, dark rum, acacia, davana, pink pepper, jasmine, hawthorn, ylang ylang, cloves, cinnamon, sweet dried fruits accord, rose, ambergris, myrrh, tonka bean, patchouli, cedar, cistus labdanum, white musk and vanilla.

When first applied, 1697 smells of wine/brandy, then “rum cask;” as this brash, fumy liquor accord subsides…

Thierry Mugler A*Men Pure Shot ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 7 March 2012 27 Comments

Oscar Pistorius for Thierry Mugler A*Men

Thierry Mugler A*Men Pure Shot, by perfumer Jacques Huclier, is a flanker to 1997′s A*Men, and was supposedly inspired by Oscar Pistorius, who’s the current A*Men model.

Pistorius is the 25-year-old South African 400-metre runner who has been called “the fastest man on no legs.”* Pistorius was born without a fibula in either leg; his lower legs were amputated when he was a baby and he’s been using prostheses since he was 13 months old. Pistorius’ J-shaped carbon-fiber prostheses look “dramatic” and futuristic, and they play a big part in the A*Men advertising campaign (especially the video).

With Pistorius in the forefront of A*Men Pure Shot, I was expecting a sport fragrance, and that’s what I got…

Askett & English Askett Absolute and Askett Essential ~ fragrance reviews

Posted by Kevin on 29 February 2012 17 Comments

Though it was 30 degrees F outside when I woke up this morning, I didn’t crave an intense amber, wood or incense fragrance; I wanted sparkling citrus…citrus that would laugh at winter and say: “Your time is almost up, Withered One…flowers and warmth are on their way!” Smiling at me from the “perfume sample bowl” near my bed were two recent citrus-y perfume releases from Askett & English, each an Eau de Cologne — Askett Absolute and Askett Essential.

Askett Absolute includes notes of tea, mandarin, bergamot, cardamom, basil, rose, orange blossom, woods, amber and musk. Absolute opens with ‘bergamot tea,’ lightly sweetened and clean. A zingy orange blossom-basil combo appears in mid-development. (I do detect a rose note, not at all soft or feminine but clear and “ripe.”) Absolute ends with a slightly floral, sheer wood accord (let’s call it “summer amber”). Overall, Absolute reminds me of a ‘sweeter’ Tom Ford Neroli Portofino…

Providence Perfume Co Hindu Honeysuckle ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 22 February 2012 14 Comments

honeysuckle

In all my years of “fragrance acquisitions,” I’ve owned five natural perfumes (and three of those were from Aveda). It’s not that I am “against” natural perfumery, but many natural perfumes are similar in style (leaden) and scent (unoriginal). Often when I test natural fragrances, I feel I’m wearing a smelly naturopathic cough syrup or joint rub (apply to arthritic knees and elbows and feel the relief!)

Providence Perfume Co* Hindu Honeysuckle does not fall into the “remedy scent” category of natural perfumery. Hindu Honeysuckle includes fragrance notes of bergamot, jasmine, vetiver, ambrette seeds, rose and coriander. I have no idea if “honeysuckle” is in the perfume or if its scent is conjured by the other fragrance notes; nor am I sure if “Hindu” honeysuckle refers to a type of honeysuckle plant from India or if the designation “Hindu” is simply Providence Perfume Co’s ‘PR speak’ (the marketing materials mention Bhramari Devi, the bee goddess, and honeysuckle’s symbolism in India — the flower represents generosity, kindness).

Hindu Honeysuckle starts off sweet and syrupy…

Palativm Replenishing Foam ~ scented body products

Posted by Kevin on 15 February 2012 9 Comments

I don’t take Palativm too seriously when it says its line of bath foams and oils was inspired by the bathing culture of ancient Rome. Ancient Romans were a pretty dirty (and smelly) bunch, and Roman public baths, no matter the opulence of their construction and decoration, were bacteria factories that made lots of people ill. I’m betting modern bathers wouldn’t find the ritual sweating-oiling-skin scraping sessions the ancient Romans endured very refreshing either.

Palativm Replenishing Foams are modern takes on the “Roman” bath; they contain Tuscan olive oil, chamomile, aloe vera and Vitamin C ester. (Vitamin C is good for skin, inside and on your body, but it’s not effective in bath products since it’s destined for the drain.) I’ve tried and enjoyed Palativm’s three bath foams…
