Pandemic Pursuits: Gardening & Reading ~ book review

Posted by Kevin on 9 September 2020 24 Comments

Being trapped inside is not good for the psyche; so, since March, I’ve spent as much time outdoors as possible. And even if this winter is the rainiest, coldest, darkest on record in Seattle, I’ll be outside awhile each day…to keep sane.

Gardening and gardens have always been important to me. I was introduced to planting and caring for plants by my maternal grandmother, a tough, never-tired/always-working woman (I do believe she ‘slept’ with one eye open and a to-do list running through her thoughts). Almost the moment I planted my own seeds under her supervision, I started reading about my plants. Their history was fascinating and learning about them took me all over the world. Some of the plants I “knew personally” had ancestors from Japan, China, South America, the Mediterranean and this thrilled me.

I just finished reading the wonderful (and beautifully illustrated) Remarkable Trees by Christina Harrison and Tony Kirkham….

Happy Daze: Ormonde Jayne Tanger & Levant ~ fragrance reviews

Posted by Kevin on 5 August 2020 10 Comments

To celebrate its 20th anniversary, Ormonde Jayne has launched a new collection: La Route de Soie (The Silk Road). Moschino Toy Boy ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 11 June 2020 10 Comments

“What perfume are you wearing?” Unless you look something like model Jhona Burjack, you may pause before answering: “Toy Boy.” I’d probably say: “Oh, I don’t know…I just grabbed one of my 200 bottles of cologne. I wasn’t paying attention!”

I’ll note here I realize ‘toy boy’ may conjure other types (for other tastes) than Burjack in leather gear. According to dictionary.com, a toy boy is: a young man noted for his good looks and sexual prowess, especially one who maintains relationships with older, more powerful persons…

Zoologist Sloth & Bat (2020 version) ~ quick fragrance reviews

Posted by Kevin on 3 June 2020 14 Comments

Sloth

[perfumer Prin Lomros; listed fragrance notes of chamomile, açaí berry, lavender, violet leaf, marigold, beeswax, anise, jatamansi, jasmine, cumin, hay, frankincense, myrrh, mushroom, oak moss, vanilla and tonka bean]

Sloth has an “herbal potion” character when first applied; there’s chamomile, light cumin and a hint of smoke. Sloth’s next phase conjures an aroma I encountered once in an ancient Thai cemetery outside Chiang Mai (incense smoke mixing with floral notes from a grove of flowering frangipani trees). In mid-development, Sloth smells like a forest fire..

Atelier Des Ors Riviera Lazuli & Pomelo Riviera ~ fragrance reviews

Posted by Kevin on 6 May 2020 20 Comments

Like a human raccoon, I was attracted to Atelier Des Ors‘ Riviera line of perfumes because of their beautiful blue bottles — with gold flakes in the bottom: sparkly! Since I’m always in the market for a fresh citrus cologne, I sampled two from the collection with notes that appealed to me (in descriptions, anyway).

Pomelo Riviera: bergamot, grapefruit, orange, jasmine, salty notes, rose, cedar

Pomelo Riviera starts with an old-fashioned mosquito repellent scent…
