Narciso Rodriguez For Him Bleu Noir ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 9 March 2016 13 Comments

Narciso Rodriguez For Him Bleu Noir, brand image

“I love blue so dark that it appears black. I like black which takes depths of dusk.” — Narciso Rodriguez.

Judging from the Narciso Rodriguez perfume line, I think Rodriguez may be more inspired by color (fabrics, packaging) than odor, for when it comes to the men’s perfumes at least, I say: ‘Love the bottles…don’t need the colognes.’ The Rodriguez men’s offerings have been nice enough, but never possess a ‘certain something’ that makes me crave them.

For Him Bleu Noir is a flanker to 2007’s Narciso Rodriguez For Him and is categorized as an aromatic fougère fragrance…

Frederic Malle Monsieur ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 2 March 2016 37 Comments

Janis Joplin

According to Barneys New York, Frédéric Malle’s inspirations for Monsieur1 were…

“…remorseless seducers2 who would playfully flit from women’s embrace to social merrymaking. Gentlemen3 whose manly and timeless elegance has relentlessly guided the development of this perfume and enabled Frédéric Malle to stay on course during the creation of this very minimal scent.”

Here they are, a-hem, “aristocrats” all…

Penhaligon’s Blasted Heath & Blasted Bloom ~ fragrance reviews

Posted by Kevin on 24 February 2016 30 Comments

Going back as far as the 18th century, the English have been lauded by visitors for their clean selves, homes, streets and towns. Buckets and basins full of hot water and suds kept everything and everyone (including pets) nearly spotless and fresh. In their latest two “perfumes,” Blasted Bloom and Blasted Heath, Penhaligon’s has taken things too far, producing fragrances with the heart (notes) of cleaning products.

“Blasted” can mean ‘drunk’ or ‘withered’ or ‘damned.’ I think of Blasted Bloom and Blasted Health as perfumes (sand)’blasted’ into banality and cleanliness with all interesting and vibrant bits of all notes they contain deleted — woods, leaves, tobacco, flowers, patchouli, etc. Aren’t clean perfumes, drenched with white musks, on the way out? Perhaps Penhaligon’s is just waaaay late to the Clean Party…

Diptyque Oud Palao ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 17 February 2016 34 Comments

Diptyque Oud Palao brand banner

Diptyque launched Oud Palao last autumn. I just got around to trying it this week. Why? Because I was 99.9 percent sure I wouldn’t like it. Oud Palao’s list of notes didn’t sound original…but to make up for that, each note, trying way too hard to excite, had a Travel the World with Diptyque! signifier in front of it: Bulgarian (rose), Laotian (oud), Madagascar (vanilla), Indian (cypriol), Sri Lankan (sandalwood), Somalian (olibanum), Spanish (cistus) and Indonesian (patchouli). I laughed.

The laugh’s on me! I love Oud Palao…

Oriza L. Legrand Cuir de L’Aigle Russe ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 10 February 2016 19 Comments

Oriza L. Legrand Cuir de L'Aigle Russe label

Oriza L. Legrand’s latest perfume has a strange name — Cuir de L’Aigle Russe.1 No, this is not the scent of a ‘Russian’ eagle’s tanned skin…I assume we’re in “Royal Leather” territory. Oriza L. Legrand is one of my favorite new fragrance houses of the last several years. So many of their perfumes are on my to-buy list that I’m paralyzed with indecision and will probably buy none. After my first sniff of it, Cuir de L’Aigle Russe also went on this weird active-but-inactive to-buy list.

Cuir de L’Aigle Russe begins with a dry lemon-bergamot accord; I detect fuzzy geranium leaf with a hint of rose, warm immortelle snuggling with cardamom and a burst of non-species-specific floral indoles…
