By Kilian Moonlight in Heaven ~ fragrance review

By Kilian Moonlight in Heaven

On my first trip to Bangkok, I was lucky enough to be served a perfect plate of coconut sticky rice with sliced mango. This dish was freshly prepared and the mango was delectable (it’s the main attraction). This famous Thai dessert has never been as good when I’ve had it in the US, perhaps due to the quality of the mangoes available here most of the year. If you’re lucky enough to live in a city that imports Alphonso mangoes from India (my favorite mango), buy some and serve them with coconut sticky rice. (Alphonso season starts in April and lasts just eight weeks.)

French niche line By Kilian launched Moonlight in Heaven last year; the perfume was developed by perfumer Calice Becker and is an homage of sorts to coconut sticky rice and mango…

Olivier Durbano Lapis Philosophorum ~ fragrance review

Olivier Durbano Lapis Philosophorum

Monday started with a blast (of snow) and a flammable propane tanker truck rolling over on the I-5 freeway near downtown Seattle, shutting down two freeways and blocking traffic for over seven hours. I left work early that day and it took me three and one-half hours to drive home (a measly nine miles). As I sat in traffic I cursed cars that blocked intersections for 10-15 minutes, Seattle city planners who made a system of inadequate roads that cease to function in rain(!), snow or if one mishap happens on the freeway…and I cursed myself. I had only gone one mile from work (it took me an hour to do this) when I realized what a stupid mistake I had made to drink 24 ounces of water before leaving my office. What to do?

Review perfume, that’s what…

Capsule Parfums Brood ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 22 February 2017 13 Comments

Capsule Parfums brand image

Capsule Parfums describes Brood as “old soul spice…a progressive take on ancient ceremonial fragrance.” Often, in perfumers’ argot, “ceremonial” means incense, and though I love incense fragrances in autumn and winter, by spring I’m getting tired of them — no more smoke or ash, please. Only Eau d’Italie Paestum Rose and L’Artisan Timbuktu remain in rotation during warm weather (and many may not consider them “true” incense fragrances). Now, a new summer-incense-y perfume has caught my attention: Capsule Parfums Brood.

Certain herbs, spices and flowers (plum comes to mind, along with other strongly-scented spring blossoms) have an light-incense vibe. Capsule Parfums has chosen wisely by including a heavy dose of spikenard (Nardostachys jatamansi) in Brood…

Mazzolari Vetiver Two Ways ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 15 February 2017 14 Comments

Mazzolari Vetiver

The Italian niche perfume company Mazzolari also owns perfume shops in Italy that sell other brands (so don’t be confused if you log onto their site and see lots of non-Mazzolari products listed). Mazzolari supposedly began as a barbershop in the late 1880s and became a perfume shop chain in the 1960s. Mazzolari’s own perfumes debuted in the early 1990s. Vetiver is the first Mazzolari perfume I’ve smelled, but Now Smell This reviewed other Mazzolari perfumes back in 2006: Alessandro, Patchouly and Zagara. I chose to start my Mazzolari journey with Vetiver,* since vetiver is one of my favorite fragrance notes.

Mazzolari Vetiver starts with a mossy, slightly indolic floral-citrus accord, creamy/sweet and cheerful. (Summer flashed before my eyes.) Slowly, a pungent vetiver emerges…

BeauFort London Fathom V ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 8 February 2017 16 Comments

Sailing by Moonlight by Albert Pinkham Ryder

There’s nothing like smelling pungent, spicy, late-winter flowers in a cool and damp atmosphere. Right now, the inside of my poorly insulated house (here’s to fresh air, wool sweaters and good health!) smells of the sweet box blossoms growing outside, and my front porch has a fragrance powerhouse in bloom — Edgeworthia. Plum blossoms are starting to open along the lake road I take into work each day…talk about flower-power, visual and scent-ual. Though it’s officially still winter, I’m smelling “green” all around me.

My first experience with the BeauFort London Come Hell or High Water collection was not a success, but by chance, Fathom V (another member of the Come Hell or High Water quintet) found me, and I’m glad it did — it’s a perfect cologne for the chilled, wet and perfumed springs we enjoy in Seattle…
