Gucci Bloom ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 16 August 2017 18 Comments

Gucci Bloom

Bloom1 is one of the first two Gucci fragrances conceptualized by Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele. As with Gucci Guilty Absolute Pour Homme, Michele worked with perfumer Alberto Morillas. In each of these fragrances, Morillas used a new, “natural” ingredient; Guilty Absolute Pour Homme contains an extract of Nootka cypress and Bloom presents Rangoon creeper (“harvested” via headspace technology in India — so claims Gucci).

Bloom begins with a penetrating, slightly fruity jasmine/tuberose accord…

4 Perfumes for a Summer Afternoon ~ Anya’s Garden Strange Magic, Mendittorosa South, Euphorium Brooklyn Butterfly & Fitzgerald and Guislain Nuit a l’Opera

Posted by Kevin on 9 August 2017 10 Comments

What to do when it’s hot as hell outside and laziness is an option? I decided to stay in a cold room, sip a cocktail (watermelon and lime juice with tequila), and climb (no sweat generated) my perfume sample “mountain.” I found some fun and interesting fragrances that go well with this crazy weather.

Anya’s Garden Strange Magic

listed notes include Aglaia odorata, orris, gardenia, chamomile, white champaca, ylang ylang, white ambergris, Clerodendrum philippinum (“Cashmere Bouquet”); 15 ml, $125

Strange Magic is strange indeed…

DS & Durga Italian Citrus and Stora Skuggan Silphium ~ fragrance reviews

Posted by Kevin on 2 August 2017 25 Comments

The dog days of summer! Seattle should reach 100 degrees Fahrenheit tomorrow! I plan on wearing perfume as I work in the garden to keep things alive (my water bill$ make friends shriek and look at me in disbelief). During this week of scorching temperatures, I decided to wear two new “garden” fragrances, one based on citrus, the other on silphium (a mystery plant).

Let’s start with citrus, “Italian” citrus. DS & Durga Italian Citrus presents a citrus-lover’s dream list of notes…

Zoologist Rhinoceros ~ fragrance review and an appreciation of Anna Merz

Posted by Kevin on 26 July 2017 26 Comments

We talk endlessly about our rights but very little about our duties. I believe our most important right is the right to give; I do not believe we have the right to grab. — Anna Merz

Sometimes when I sit down to write a perfume review, more interesting things pop into my mind (and that’s a relief; I often feel perfumed-out these days). As I looked at my fragrance sample of Zoologist Rhinoceros, my mind went back to 2013 when I read the New York Times obituary of a woman unknown to me: Anna Merz. After reading the obit, I felt happy and energized, and I shared the article with friends, including Robin here at NST.

Anna Merz was born in England but spent most of her life in Africa, first in Ghana and then in Kenya and South Africa. She was a successful businesswoman in Ghana and got involved in wildlife conservation…

Escentric Molecules Molecule 04 & Escentric 04 ~ fragrance reviews (sort of)

Escentric Molecules Molecule 04 & Escentric 04

Let me state the obvious to anyone who has ever read my posts: I am not a chemist! If you are, and have more scientific information on what follows, don’t be shy about commenting (I won’t take offense).

Escentric Molecules’ latest creations, Molecule 041 and Escentric 042, are about the aroma chemical Javanol — a sandalwood-type molecule prepared from turpentine obtained from pine trees.3 Molecule 04 is “just” Javanol (diluted, of course); Escentric 04 is a more complex composition built around Javanol.

I can’t smell Javanol…
