Dolce & Gabbana The One for Men ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 7 May 2008 63 Comments

Dolce & Gabbana The One For Men cologne

It’s spring — the perfect time to release ambery, spicy, oriental fragrances full of coffee, musk, cocoa, patchouli, ambergris and vanilla…right? I used to complain about sparkly “resort” citrus fragrances being released in October and heavy, rich scents coming out just before or during summer, but this off-season system of fragrance debuts has been a money-saver for me. I hold off buying fragrances I can’t wear immediately, so by the time cold weather rolls around, this spring’s and summer’s warm, wintry-smelling fragrance releases will have lost their gloss of “newness” and I can look at them dispassionately, and buy only fragrances I love (not simply like).

Dolce & Gabbana’s The One for Men (developed by perfumer Olivier Polge) has a cool-weather vibe…

Maurer & Wirtz Tabac Original ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 1 May 2008 38 Comments

Tabac Original cologne

The German company Mäurer & Wirtz launched the Tabac Original fragrance in soap form in 1938. In 1955, Tabac Original, developed by perfumer Arturo Jordi-Pey, made its debut as a cologne. For years, every time I went to Europe, I would see faded advertisements for Tabac Original at tobacconists or pharmacies, and often, the white bottles of cologne would be “baking” in sunshine in the shops’ front windows. I assumed Tabac Original was “the European Old Spice” and went about my business – I didn’t need to sniff it. (My opinions of “cheap” — inexpensive — scents and Old Spice have since changed.) Tabac Original has dull packaging and is treated sloppily by shopkeepers, but the fragrance deserves some respect…

Boss Pure by Hugo Boss ~ fragrance review

Hugo Boss Boss Pure cologne for men

Recently, I was worried I had run out of ways to review mediocre, smell-alike mainstream men’s fragrances. Should I continue to tax my imagination and keep thumbing through Roget’s Thesaurus for new ways to say a fragrance is “dull,” “insipid,” “typical,” etc., or should I simply ignore boring new releases? I jokingly said to Robin here at Now Smell This that we should create a ‘review form’ for such scents; it would make reviewing so much easier. Of course, a perfume blog can’t ignore new releases and I can’t use a review form over and over again without becoming a bore myself, but just this once…

Mainstream Fragrance Review Form/Category: Men’s “Fresh”/Sport

The Givens:

— Artificial-smelling ingredients
— The perfume develops rapidly; excellent lasting power/annoying sillage
— Contains persistent marine and/or ozonic “fresh” fragrance notes
— Metallic citrus opening; slightly “spicy”, mildly “floral” middle; and woody dry down; all fragrance notes are “generic,” “nondescript”…

Montale Fruits of the Musk ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 17 April 2008 35 Comments

Berries

I’ve been called a fruitcake and I’ve been called a fruit — but not because I smell fruity. Men’s and unisex fragrances rarely feature a sustained stream of natural-smelling (non-citrus) fruit aromas, so my perfume cabinet has always had an empty space where I could lodge a FRUIT FRAGRANCE or two — but that situation may soon change.

Last weekend, there was an unseasonably hot (over 75 degrees Fahrenheit!) day here in the Northwest and I stayed outside to feel the warm sun, to smell the saucer magnolias, wallflowers, hyacinths and clematis that are in bloom, and to enjoy the fragrant sea breeze blowing in from the west. The beautiful day made me think of the coming summer and I felt ‘summery’ myself; I reached for an untried perfume sample that sounded perfect for such a glorious day: Montale’s Fruits of the Musk…

Thierry Mugler A*Men Pure Coffee ~ fragrance review

Thierry Mugler A*Men Pure CoffeeThierry Mugler A*Men Pure Coffee

Coffee and I go waaaaaay back. I grew up in a household where I had no set time for bed and no restrictions on what I read or watched on TV. I could also eat and drink what I liked (I was not allowed to drink, let’s say, whiskey or beer openly, but when I’d admit taking a nip here or there I was not punished). I would start my day with a cup of coffee — even in first grade (my grandmother thought coffee, cream and sugar were ‘health foods.’) My free-style childhood and almost constant high approval ratings by my parents and live-in grandmother have contributed to some character “flaws” to be sure (a famous L.A. psychic looked at my palm once and proclaimed: “I see…Buckingham Palace!”) and my early coffee consumption no doubt made me what I am today: a man immune to the effects of caffeine.

Still, I love the scents and flavors of coffee: fresh coffee beans, roasting coffee beans (an aroma you can easily experience in Seattle), brewing coffee, percolating coffee, espresso, coffee in chocolates, ice cream, cakes, cookies and custards. I never thought I would like the scent of coffee on my person. The idea of wearing a coffee perfume made me queasy, until I sampled Thierry Mugler’s A*Men Pure Coffee. Almost as much as I detest A*Men, I enjoy A*Men Pure Coffee…
