A handful of hand creams: A round-up for winter 2008

Posted by Jessica on 15 November 2008 36 Comments

Winter is approaching in my part of the world, and it’s time to protect skin — including hands — against the cold, dry air. I expect a good-quality hand cream to moisturize effectively, of course, but it will appeal to me even more if it has natural ingredients, a lush texture, stylish packaging … and a fragrance with aromatherapeutic benefits or pleasant associations. Here are a few choices that include some or all of those features.

The scent of L’Occitane Honey & Lemon Hand Cream is both bright and soothing, tart and sweet; it’s mouth-watering without being too dessert-like. The cream itself is a bit less dense than the original Shea Butter Hand Cream (a L’Occitane classic, with its super-thick consistency and its milky aroma), but it still includes a generous amount of shea butter. Its small tube is perfect for carrying in a purse. ($10 for 1 oz. at loccitane)

Malin + Goetz Vitamin B5 Hand Treatment is my current pick for a workplace hand cream…

Just Calm Down: The Body Shop Divine Calm Sublime Body Lotion & Essence of Vali Calm Relax Mist

Posted by Jessica on 1 November 2008 18 Comments

Lately, I’ve been experiencing some stress in my life beyond Now Smell This. It’s just deadline-related tension, and it will all be resolved for better or for worse within another month or two, but in the meantime, I’m feeling all tied up in knots. This seemed like the perfect time for me to test the calming benefits of two lavender-fragranced body products. Lavender has been used for centuries for its mind-soothing properties (as well as its antiseptic qualities), and if it was good enough for both the ancient Romans and Queen Elizabeth I, it’s good enough for me!

Divine Calm Sublime Body Lotion belongs to The Body Shop’s new Wellbeing line, which is comprised of four scent families for different purposes: Deep Sleep, Total Energy, Pure Detox, and Divine Calm. Divine Calm Sublime Body Lotion contains French lavender essential oil…

Ormonde Jayne Replenishing Body Lotion in Frangipani Absolute

Posted by Jessica on 18 October 2008 10 Comments

Ormonde Jayne Replenishing Body LotionThe London-based niche perfumery Ormonde Jayne offers a collection of bath and body products, including Essential Bathing Oil, Hydrating Bath & Shower Crème, and Replenishing Body Lotion, to accompany its fragrances. These body products claim to benefit the skin while equaling the elegance and richness of their namesake perfumes.

I’ve tried the Replenishing Body Lotion in Frangipani Absolute, wearing it with Frangipani Absolute Eau de Parfum for the sake of comparison. The compositions for both the Eau de Parfum and the Body Lotion include top notes of linden blossom, magnolia flower, lime peel; a heart of white frangipani, jasmine, rose, tuberose, water lily, plum, green orchid; and a base of amber, musk, cedar, French vanilla…

Coffee, coffee, coffee ~ scented body products

Posted by Jessica on 5 October 2008 24 Comments

I’ve written before about my love for coffee, both as a beverage and as a fragrance. I’m always surprised that more coffee-scented body products don’t exist. Surely I’m not the only person who loves this smell so much? For anyone who shares my obsession, here’s a summary of a few high-quality toiletries that include actual coffee for its smell as well as its other benefits.

Lush’s Sonic Death Monkey Shower Gel (shown above, middle) looks like something you could drizzle over ice cream, and it smells like a drink that would set you back about $7 at Starbucks: a potent mocha blend of coffee and chocolate, with a shot of orange syrup…

Paul Yacomine Parfum de Coiffeur ~ hair perfumes, part 2

Posted by Jessica on 20 September 2008 6 Comments

Paul Yacomine Parfum de CoiffeurPaul Yacomine is a London-based hairstylist with a glamorous client list of celebrities and models; he is also the creator of a hair-care line that specializes in the high-tech delivery of beneficial ingredients. A trio of hair perfumes was recently added to the product list: called Parfum de Coiffeur, it promises to treat hair gently while adding shine and fragrance with natural oils.

The Parfum de Coiffeur packaging is coolly attractive: its three metal spray bottles, each holding a different scent, look like they should contain top-secret serums or vaccines, and the set is presented in a Mission Impossible-worthy canister of silvery metal and clear plastic. When removed from their niches, the sprays dispense their fragrances — Bergamot, Frangipani, or Amber — smoothly and evenly…
