Avril Lavigne Black Star ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 23 August 2009 63 Comments

Avril Lavigne Black Star advert

Black Star is the first fragrance release from pop star Avril Lavigne, in cooperation with Procter & Gamble Prestige, and it’s being promoted as “a deliciously distinctive fragrance that embodies Avril’s individuality.” Lavigne herself comments, “It’s all about being edgy and feminine in a fun way,” and she reportedly requested the Eau de Parfum’s dark chocolate accord, which is combined with notes of pear, hibiscus flower, and black plum.

Black Star’s pink-and-black, star-shaped bottle (see below) isn’t exactly a model of “individuality,” since it looks like the love child of Thierry Mugler Angel and Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb. It’s weightier in person than it appears in photographs, and it includes a removable, studded metallic band that can be worn as a ring or a necklace charm. The Black Star box is also printed with a “studded” pattern and texture, as a reference to the belts and bracelets that Lavigne typically wears. I did a little extra research for this review, since I thought I didn’t know much about Avril Lavigne, other than that she’s a Canadian singer who sports a mall-punk style and that she infamously mispronounced David Bowie’s name at a Grammy Awards event. When I checked out a few videos, however, I realized that I’ve been absorbing her songs for a while…

WASH WITH JOE Coffeemint Invigorating Bodywash ~ scented body products

WASH WITH JOE Coffeemint Invigorating BodywashWASH WITH JOE Coffeemint Invigorating BodywashWASH WITH JOE Coffeemint Invigorating Bodywash

I came across WASH WITH JOE Coffeemint Invigorating Bodywash by chance: I was browsing in a C.O. Bigelow store during an out-of-town trip, and a shelf of WASH WITH JOE bottles caught my eye and pulled me across the room, as if by magnetic force. When I covertly sniffed one of the bottles, I was instantly hooked on its fragrance and needed to purchase it immediately. Then I went for a cup of coffee across the street.

I later learned that WASH WITH JOE is the creation of graphic designer/beauty entrepreneur/coffee-drinker Jane Schub, who is the mind (and the eye) behind the Strange/Beautiful nail polishes that I’ve been admiring at Bergdorf Goodman for the past few months. Schub’s design background has provided her with ample sources of inspiration for those polish colors and this new body wash. JOE’s label was influenced by the work of industrial designer Raymond Loewy (who created some of the best-known corporate logos of the twentieth century), the Campbell’s Soup can as interpreted by Andy Warhol, and the movie Good Night and Good Luck (filmed in black-and-white, and set in the 1950s). It’s the visual equivalent of a double espresso: bold, direct, and sophisticated…

Top 10 Summer Fragrances 2009

Posted by Jessica on 10 July 2009 153 Comments

summer

This year, it seemed as though summer would never really begin in my part of the world. After weeks of almost-daily rain, however, and an odd chilly spell that saw me wearing black tights well into June, we’ve finally enjoyed some well-deserved days of sunny blue skies and warmer temperatures. I’m finally adjusting my clothing, my fragrances, and even my mood to suit the climate. So, at last, here is a list of my personal fragrance choices for the season.

Diptyque L’Ombre dans L’Eau. I have a feeling I mentioned this fragrance in my top picks for Spring 2008. I wear it even more often during summer, and I’ve done so for the past five or six years. For me, L’Ombre dans L’Eau is the perfect balance of floral, berry, and grass notes, with a rosy heart that suits my tastes perfectly…

A ring of roses ~ scented body products

Dr. Bronner's Rose Pure Castile Soaprose-slice-2Thayers Rose Petal Witch Hazel Toner

The rose has probably received more tributes in writing and song than any other flower; without even trying, anyone can easily think of a famous rose quotation or two. I recently realized that my own formative literary encounter with rose imagery was the classic children’s book The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. The Rose is an important secondary character in the story: she is vain and coquettish but secretly vulnerable, and her relationship with the Prince symbolizes some of the complexities of love. (As a child, I was also very impressed by the depiction of the rose in the film version of The Little Prince.)

Although rose is my favorite note in perfumery, I try not to discuss rose-scented products too often, just because I don’t want to be monotonous. However, June is the month of roses, so I’m going to indulge myself by mentioning a few recent favorites here. And, because we should still stop and smell the proverbial roses even (or especially) during a difficult economy, all of these products are available for $10 or less…

Arghand Mountain Herb Soap ~ scented body products

Arghand Mountain Herb soap

So many higher-end body products and beauty products promote themselves with the latest hyped ingredient (argan oil, açaí berries), a “green” gimmick (boxes that sprout seeds if you plant them!), or the name-dropping of a celebrity (or celebrity spouse) as creative director. On the other hand, Arghand soaps and body oils possess an authenticity that puts all those mere trend-followers to shame. Arghand is a cooperative in Afghanistan; it was founded by Sarah Chayes, a former National Public Radio reporter, and its members craft their wares from locally-grown materials. Arghand works closely in a fair-trade relationship with farmers in the region, and its member-workers are justly compensated for their labor. Moreover, the project offers all its participants an alternative to the local opium industry.

Mountain Herb is one of seven soap blends offered by Arghand, and its ingredients give a good idea of the raw materials that are used in the cooperative’s products: hemp oil, black cumin, pomegranate seed oil, and wild mint essential oil. (The pomegranate, one of the region’s legendary crops, offers restorative, anti-oxidant properties; hemp oil keeps skin soft and hydrated.) The soap’s cold-pressed oils and steam-distilled plant essences have been blended into a gentle base of palm and coconut oil, which is hand-milled and hand-molded before it’s cured…
