Etat Libre d’Orange Noel au Balcon ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 17 December 2010 53 Comments

When I first heard about Noël au Balcon from Etat Libre d’Orange, it was being offered as a limited edition fragrance for the 2007 holiday season. I was disappointed that I wouldn’t have a chance to try it, since it was only available at Sephora in France. Fortunately, Noël au Balcon joined the permanent Etat Libre line-up about a year ago, and now that I’ve had a chance to wear it, the season seems right for a review. Noël au Balcon’s composition includes notes of tangerine, vanilla, honey, orange blossom, apricot, red pepper, patchouli, musk, cistus, cinnamon, nigella, and amber, and it was created by the perfumer Antoine Maisondieu (who has produced a number of fragrances for Etat Libre, including another of my favorites, the aldehydic peachy-floral Vraie Blonde).

Since we’re dealing with Etat Libre d’Orange, there is the requisite punning in the fragrance’s title and some racy imagery in its logo and its descriptive “story”; allusions to cleavage abound. The proverb “Noël au balcon, Pâques au tison” means that a warm Christmas — warm enough to spend on the balcony — will be followed by an unseasonably cool Easter (requiring “firebrands”). And the expression “avoir du monde au balcon,” or “the balcony is crowded,” is a reference to a shapely bosom…

Pattern Sage Body Wash and Body Lotion ~ scented body products

Posted by Jessica on 11 December 2010 8 Comments

Earlier this year, I posted a review of Pattern Body Washes, a simple-but-smart line of multi-purpose cleansers that happen to have wonderful fragrances. Pattern recently added two new body washes and a body lotion to its range, and (believe it or not) I’ve actually been running low on body products in my bathroom, so this week was the perfect time to try them.

Sage Body Wash and Body Lotion, in particular, suit my mood perfectly right now. The Sage fragrance, which would be suitable for men or women, is a fresh, herbaceous scent that makes me feel a little more alert in the morning and a little calmer in the evening. It includes “essential oils of sage, star anise, grapefruit and cotton flower.” When I use the body wash — which lathers nicely, by the way — I notice the leafy sage note most of all…

Boadicea the Victorious Exotic ~ fragrance review

Boadicea the Victorious is one of those perfume houses that I’ve managed to ignore for a while. It happens to be an easy line to ignore, because it has such limited availability; moreover, something about Boadicea has always irritated me. Maybe it’s the cumbersomely large range of scents (does anyone really need to start a new line with forty-plus fragrances?), the strenuous emphasis on “luxury” and “heritage,” or the single-adjective fragrance names that are hard to distinguish from one another as well as difficult to read on Boadicea’s small, black-on-black labels.

When I finally stopped by Henri Bendel to try a few Boadicea the Victorious fragrances, I was joined by a sales associate who turned out to be well versed in the line. After I had picked up a few bottles, spritzed a few paper blotters, and decided that neither Romantic, nor Inspiring, nor Delicate (which seems like a knock-off of Penhaligon’s Bluebell) were making any strong impression on me, the sales associate suggested that I try Exotic. Fragrances with the word “exotic” in their descriptive text rarely appeal to me, and I would not describe myself as “exotic” by any means, but I took the newly sprayed blotter from her and inhaled. Then I tested Exotic on my wrist, and I ended up savoring it for the rest of the afternoon; and when I later got my hands on a sample vial of Exotic, I enjoyed it all over again…

Six Scents Series Three Ascent and #087 ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 27 November 2010 16 Comments

Six Scents Series Three Fragrance 4 Ascent

I was intrigued by the Series One debut collection from the Six Scents Fragrance Initiative when it was released in 2008, and I purchased Smells Like Teen Spirit (a collaboration between perfumer Mark Buxton and designer duo Preen) and wore it with pleasure for the next year or so. I somehow missed out on Series Two; last fall and winter was a chaotic time for me, so it may have just slipped past me. I’ve been much more aware of Series Three, although I’m not as familiar with the fashion participants this time around; on the other hand, most of the perfumers’ names were familiar to me right away. Two of the of fragrances from this group that piqued my interest, in particular, were Fragrance 4 and Fragrance 5.

Fragrance 4, Ascent (shown above), is a collaboration between fashion designer Rad Hourani and perfumer Christophe Raynaud, with notes of pear, violet leaf, ylang ylang, rose, cedar, leather, incense, powdery musks, tonka bean and benzoin. This fragrance fascinates me because it has evolved differently nearly every time I’ve worn it over the past week. One time, it shifted quickly from greenish violet leaf to powder to dirtied leather and musk, as sequentially as a stop-action film of the sun rising and setting, or — as articulated by Hourani and Raynaud for the “childhood” theme of this series — a transition from infancy to adulthood…

Laurence Dumont Les Senteurs Gourmandes Tendre Madeleine ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 21 November 2010 35 Comments

Madeleines

Les Senteurs Gourmandes by Laurence Dumont is one of those lines that often slips my mind for no particular reason. It used to be stocked at Sephora, where I have a hard time concentrating anyway (due to the crowds, the glaring lighting, and the loud music), but it’s not there anymore; and when I do spot this brand somewhere else, I briefly wonder, who exactly is Laurence Dumont? and, am I really in the mood for vanilla today? before my attention wanders elsewhere. Well, I actually am in the mood for gourmand fragrances this fall, and now that I’ve sampled a few fragrances from the line, I’ve found myself enjoying them.

My current favorite from Les Senteurs Gourmandes is Tendre Madeleine, part of the brand’s “Childhood Memories” fragrance family. Tendre Madeleine is described as “sweet, warm, and gourmet, a tempting treat from morning till night,” and its notes are listed as bergamot, cannelle [cinnamon], almond, vanilla, white musk and precious wood. Like many of this line’s fragrances, Tendre Madeleine is indeed dessert-inspired, but it’s soft and light enough to be wearable in most situations. It begins as a dusting of spice, just as much nutmeg as cinnamon, over a buttery sponge cake. There’s a suggestion of candied orange from the bergamot. The almond-marzipan note does have a hint of the so-called “Play-Doh” effect, but that’s something I enjoy in small quantities. The vanilla becomes most noticeable on its own in the late dry down…
