Jo Malone Tangy Rhubarb & Elderflower Cordial ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 29 April 2021 26 Comments

After a full year of living almost entirely in my own neighborhood, with my only “travel” being scattered visits to other essential destinations within a ten-mile radius (occasional check-ins at my workplace, a few doctor appointments, quarterly haircuts), I recently spent a warm April afternoon in Manhattan just for fun. My outing included my first in-person fragrance shopping since January 2019, including a well-timed trip to Sephora.

Jo Malone‘s Summer 2021 limited edition “The Brits: Marmalade Collection” was on my to-sniff list, so I was happy to spot testers of all five fragrances on Sephora’s fragrance wall…

Zoologist Snowy Owl ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 11 March 2021 14 Comments

A thick carpet of silver envelops the landscape, untouched but for the dazzling reflection of the sun. Snow stretches as far as the eye can see, while a bitter wind rolls silently across the sky, its hush barely broken by the powerful beat of an ivory wing…

Thus we are introduced to Snowy Owl, the newest perfume from independent fragrance brand Zoologist. A real-life snowy owl (Bubo scandiacus), I’ve learned from the National Audubon Society, is a “large, powerful owl of the high Arctic tundra, colored for camouflage during northern winters.” Its namesake fragrance was developed for Zoologist by Dawn Spencer Hurwitz…

BDK Parfums Rouge Smoking, Pas Ce Soir, Nuit de Sable & Gris Charnel ~ fragrance reviews

Posted by Jessica on 25 February 2021 11 Comments

I’ve been thinking again about Kevin’s recent post about samples. I recognize his frustration with so many niche brands: the ever-higher prices and well-designed websites don’t always guarantee novel or memorable olfactory experiences. I deliberately stalled on trying the new-ish brand BDK Parfums (founded in 2016, but only available in the United States since 2020) because I had a hunch that, despite a wave of online adulation, this would be more of the same. But then I had a chance to receive a BDK sample set as a gift-with-purchase, so I gave in; why not?

If you’re familiar with French and French-inspired niche perfumery brands of the twenty-first century, you’ll recognize this checklist of familiar elements…

5 Perfumes: unexpected comfort scents

Posted by Jessica on 2 February 2021 28 Comments

I recently attended an online work meeting that opened with an “icebreaker” question: what’s your favorite comfort food? I enjoyed hearing the responses, which included some sweet-and-starchy favorites but a few spicy and savory treats, too. The idea of “comfort,” just like most things, can vary and shift. I’d say the same thing about “comfort scents” — I definitely have a few vanilla-based favorites that make me feel like I’m tucked into a fluffy blanket, but lately I’ve also been reaching for fragrances that offer other olfactory routes to calm and security. Here are just a few that I’ve recently encountered or re-encountered.

Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Couverture d’Hiver: This is DSH’s latest Holiday edition, which takes “a foresty hillside covered in snow” as a starting point and segues from a whiff of brisk winter air, with hints of petrichor and pine, into a cozy white-cocoa-and-musk skin scent…

Serge Lutens Des Clous pour une Pelure ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 7 January 2021 20 Comments

Last February, Serge Lutens launched Des Clous pour une Pelure, a new fragrance in the brand’s Les Eaux de Politesse collection. (You may remember that Les Eaux are designed to be “light, fresh, devoid of the heady, sticky, overly masculine notes of colognes.” I didn’t, and had to check.) Lutens himself says, “I use the word ‘clous’ — meaning nails, or things that are practically worthless — metaphorically, because this Eau is dear to me! The orange peel pricks your eyes, and by nails I mean cloves, of course.” Of course.

We also learn that “[t]his invigorating and spicy fragrance traces its roots back to the medieval tradition of clove-studded pomanders” — now, there’s some information I can work with…
