Tauer Perfumes Pentachord White ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 30 March 2012 32 Comments

Whistler White Symphony

It’s taken me a while to get around to trying the Pentachord fragrances from Tauer Perfumes, mainly just because they were difficult to find in New York City for a while and I never quite seemed to get around to placing a sample order. When I did finally try them this month, it was immediately apparent that White was my favorite of the three. Like its fellow Pentachords, White is composed from five synthetic ingredients — no more, no less. In this case, the fragrance’s central idea is “the clear melody of royal iris” and its notes are iris root, violet, rosewood, ambergris and Bourbon vanilla.

The official description for Pentachord White evokes “a white clean garden” that combines the “crisp beauty” of its flowers with the “warmth” of its trees and background. I’m noticing much more crispness than warmth in White: the note that makes the strongest impression on me is a cool, silvery-green violet. The violet never really gives way entirely to the softly rooty iris…

Etat Libre d’Orange Bijou Romantique ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 23 March 2012 40 Comments

Etat Libre d'Orange Bijou Romantique packaging

When I read the initial announcement for Etat Libre d’Orange’s release of Bijou Romantique, I had a feeling that I would enjoy this perfume; now that I’ve tried it a few times, I’m happy to say that it has fulfilled all my expectations. Bijou Romantique was developed by perfumer Mathilde Bijaoui (whose earlier Like This is one of my favorite Etat Libre fragrances), and its composition includes notes of bergamot, Italian lemon, pink berries essence, ylang-ylang, sage, iris of Tuscany, EVEE (apparently a molecule from Mane’s laboratories), coconut JE, Haitian vetiver, benzoin, and vanilla.

According to the Etat Libre d’Orange website and other sources, Bijou Romantique’s inspirations are diverse and colorful. They include cameo jewelry; a phrase from the Old Testament, “Her price is far above rubies” (Proverbs 31:10); a line from the French writer Alfred de Musset, “J’ai souffert souvent, je me suis trompé quelquefois, mais j’ai aimé” (“I have suffered often, sometimes I have been mistaken, but I have loved,” from On ne badine pas avec l’amour, 1834); and (via Luckyscent) a reference to the cult comic-book series Corto Maltese. Got all that? (If there’s also a sexual double-entendre in the name or concept, as there often is for Etat Libre, I may be missing it.)

So, what do we have inside the bottle…

Gud Floral Cherrynova Body Wash, Body Mist and Hand Cream ~ scented body products

Gud Floral Cherrynova

Güd (pronounced “good”) is a new line of fragranced bath and body products brought to us by Burt’s Bees. Its upbeat promotional campaign, complete with clever “scratch ‘n’ sniff” cards keyed to an animated video on Güd’s Facebook page and website, has been easy to spot in recent weeks. The products themselves have practical yet adorable packaging ornamented with cheerful, collage-like imagery of fruits and flowers. The full line of eight products is available in three fragrances, with which Güd has smartly covered three perenially popular categories: a citrus (Orange Petalooza), a vanilla (Vanilla Flame) and a light floral (Floral Cherrynova).

Cherry blossom-fragranced products have long been best-sellers for Bath & Body Works, of course, not to mention the cherry blossom scents released by everyone from L’Occitane to Guerlain. I don’t usually find cherry blossom perfumes compelling enough to wear on a regular basis, but I do enjoy this simple, delicate floral note in body-product formats. Güd’s version…

Neela Vermeire Creations Mohur ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 9 March 2012 33 Comments

roses

Last month I tried all three fragrances from Neela Vermeire Créations in one sitting, one after the other. Trayee made me think, and Bombay Bling made me smile, but Mohur made me swoon a bit. Kevin has already written an excellent review of Trayee and Bombay Bling, in which he mentioned that Mohur wasn’t quite his type; however, it is exactly my type, so I’m happy to follow up with a review of this fragrance, which is described as “a combination of opulent moghul rose perfumes and a distinguished spicy leather bouquet.”

Mohur’s notes are listed as cardamom, coriander, ambrette, carrot, black pepper, elemi, rose, jasmine, orris, aubepin flower, almond milk, violet, orris, leather, sandalwood, amber, white woods, patchouli, oudh, benzoin, vanilla and tonka bean. Its background “story” includes references to the British Raj era, to the mohur coin that was used under British rule in India, and to the Mughal empress (and perfumer) Noor Jahan. (You can read more about the fragrance’s historical allusions on the richly annotated and illustrated Neela Vermeire Créations website.)

My knowledge of Indian history is woefully limited…

Lancome Tresor Midnight Rose ~ fragrance review

Lancome Midnight Rose adLancome Midnight Rose bottle

Lancôme has released a few limited edition flankers to Trésor over the years, but it didn’t really court a new generation of perfume-wearers until 2010, when it offered Trésor In Love as a “fresher” interpretation of the 1990s classic. Trésor In Love has just been joined by a second flanker, Trésor Midnight Rose, which is billed as “Charming. Mischievous. Desirable” and seems to be directed at a similarly young audience.

Lancôme names Trésor Midnight Rose’s notes as raspberry, black currant bud absolute, rose absolute, jasmine, vanilla, and musk. (An earlier list also included pink pepper, peony, and cedar.) The fragrance was developed by perfumer Anne Flipo and it is packaged in a purple ombré version of the Trésor In Love bottle. The actress Emma Watson is the “face” of Midnight Rose, and I found the commercial in which she strides along the streets of Paris and beguiles a young bookshop clerk to be charming, indeed. (Two asides: the bookstore appears to be Shakespeare & Company; and, I once saw Emma Watson stepping into a boutique on New York’s Madison Avenue. She was quite petite and pretty, and still very young-looking!)

Trésor Midnight Rose bears little similarity to the well-groomed peachy rose of the original Trésor…
