Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day Bluebell Liquid Dish Soap ~ home fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 8 June 2012 16 Comments

Bluebells, closeupMrs. Meyer's Clean Day Bluebell Liquid Dish Soap Bluebells

Last fall I reviewed two bluebell perfumes from Penhaligon’s and Jo Malone and I wasn’t thrilled by either one, but I did express my appreciation for bluebells in general and my wish that more bluebell fragrances would be released. I haven’t noticed any new bluebell launches in the fine fragrance market (yet), but I was happy to learn that the latest fragrance blend from green home-fragrance brand Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day is…Bluebell.

Like all Mrs. Meyer’s products, the Bluebell scent collection is made with “earth-friendly essential oils and other natural ingredients.” This Bluebell fragrance is composed from notes of lemon, bergamot, jasmine, tuberose, rose, lavender, sage, muguet, vetiver and ginger. It’s a lengthy list of notes, but Mrs. Meyer’s Bluebell scent turns out to be light and soothing and pretty…

Serge Normant Avah ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 1 June 2012 18 Comments

Serge Normant Avah

It’s funny how my brain will absorb and retain information from fashion-and-beauty magazines when I’m getting so forgetful in some other areas. When I heard that Serge Normant was planning to release a fragrance, I nodded sagely to myself and thought, “Ah yes, Julia Roberts’s stylist.” I’m not even a Julia Roberts fan, so why do I know and remember this fact? Obviously, the ink used to print women’s glossies has some sort of peculiar chemical-bonding effect on my brain.

In any case: stylist Serge Normant’s first fragrance is Avah, a composition of ylang ylang, jasmine, amber, soft woods, and musks with the tagline “Enter the exotic.” It’s formulated to be worn on hair as well as skin, which makes sense for the brand. The name “Avah” supposedly means “desire” and “life,” although I haven’t been able to track down that etymology. (Let me know if you have a better idea of its origin!) In the “making of” video for Avah and its ad, Normant mentions his interest in making women look (and smell) “sexy without hitting people over the head” and he describes the scent and its visuals as having a style of “rawness with a little touch of sophistication.”

That all sounds just about right…

Joya Ames Soeurs ~ fragrance review

Joya Âmes SœursThe Book of Lost Fragrances by M. J. Rose

I’m always happy to come across connections between perfumery and literature, so I read (and thoroughly enjoyed) M. J. Rose’s “novel of suspense” The Book of Lost Fragrances soon after its release, and then I tried the accompanying scent from the independent perfume house Joya. According to the author’s website, Rose sent an advance copy of the novel to Joya as a gesture of thanks, since she had been burning Joya candles for ambiance while writing it; the company’s owner, Frederick Bouchardy, was inspired to create a fragrance in response to the novel.

The result is Âmes Sœurs (Scent of Soulmates), developed for Joya by perfumer Rayda Vega and described as “an orange blossom wrapped in incense, smoke and musk.” Its official list of notes includes tamarind, grapefruit, and cypress; rose Bulgar, ginger, and orange blossom; and cedarwood, incense, amber and sweet musk.

If you’ve read The Book of Lost Fragrances, you’re familiar with its motif of an ancient Egyptian perfume, preserved through the ages…

Sarah Horowitz Perfect Bliss ~ fragrance review

Sarah Horowitz Perfect Bliss

Some rainy days inspire me to match their cloudiness with watery, wistful fragrances like Guerlain Apres L’Ondée or Frédéric Malle L’Eau d’Hiver. Other rainy days, particularly ones that fall after an especially beautiful sunny weekend in May, provoke me to counteract the forecast with something bright and euphoric. Lately I’ve been using a patterned magenta umbrella that cheers me slightly whenever I open it, despite the gloom and damp of the day’s weather; the right fragrance can have a similar effect on my mood.

This week, my anti-gray fragrance is Sarah Horowitz Perfect Bliss, for which the perfumer Sarah Horowitz-Thran was inspired by the floral arrangements at her own wedding. The composition for Perfect Bliss includes top notes of blood orange, mango, and papaya; a middle accord of gardenia; and base notes of vanilla, patchouli, cedar, and musk.

I like Sarah Horowitz’s lists of notes, because they usually reflect just what I’m smelling in the fragrances themselves…

Anjolie Ayurveda Neroli Lemon Body Butter & Seven Spice Body Oil ~ scented body products

Posted by Jessica on 11 May 2012 13 Comments

Nearly two years ago, I reviewed some fragranced soaps from a small brand called Anjolie Ayurveda. I was impressed by them on various counts: their natural scent blends, their high quality, their artistic packaging, their interesting back-story. I don’t think I’ve come across any other soaps that quite compare to these. I was happy to learn recently that Anjolie had added scented body butters and body oils to its catalog, and the unpredictable warm-to-cold, dry-to-humid weather of the past few weeks has given me a good opportunity to test the moisturizing effects of these new products.

Anjolie Ayurveda’s Aromatherapy Body Butters are offered in four scents: Lavender, Neem Tulsi, Sandalwood Saffon, and Neroli Lemon. I was drawn to the Neroli Lemon because I’m a great fan of neroli in general: I find it cheerful, cleansing, and calming all at the same time. Anjolie promises that “neroli brings a romantic and sophisticated air while lemon adds bright citrus notes” to this blend, and I agree. It’s a simple, satisfying fragrance. The Body Butter’s formula feels more like a thick cream…
