Antica Farmacista Happy Hour ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 21 September 2021 12 Comments

Every year, at some point in late August or early September, I end up feeling too hot and cranky to wear most of the perfumes I love. Just as I pare down my wardrobe to three loose-fitting, machine-washable dresses during the inevitable late-summer humidity, I pull a handful of refreshing, lightweight fragrances to the front of my stash. For the time being, I can’t even stand my usual powdery roses and violets and ambers; I can only tolerate sheer, tart fruit blends like Jo Malone Tangy Rhubarb or Clarins Eau des Jardins or citrusy colognes like Editions M.R. Acide and Le Jardin Retrouvé Citron Boboli.

This year, Antica Farmacista Happy Hour made my heat-wave cut. It’s one of five scents in Antica Farmacista’s new Facets collection…

Vilhelm Parfumerie Chicago High & Imaginary Authors The Soft Lawn Edition 2.0 ~ fragrance reviews

Posted by Jessica on 20 August 2021 5 Comments

This news item hasn’t received the attention it might have attracted at a less fraught moment in history: F. Scott Fitzgerald’s iconic novel The Great Gatsby has entered the public domain in 2021. (Just in time for us to realize that our own Twenties might not be quite as Roaring as we hoped — at least, not yet, thanks to Covid-19.) Over the past ninety-five years, The Great Gatsby has given rise to dozens of adaptations in all media. (Do you have a favorite film version of this novel? I don’t.) Even a few perfumes have attempted to capture the spirit of this classic book, with Vilhelm Parfumerie’s Chicago High joining the group in 2020.

I wondered about Chicago High’s inspiration when I read this description…

Summer roses x 4 ~ fragrance & body product reviews

Posted by Jessica on 29 July 2021 4 Comments

How has your summer been going? Mine has been feeling very transitional, very limbo-like. Covid numbers have been going down in my city; or, wait, have they? I’ve been notified that I’ll be returning to the office on a “hydrid” schedule after Labor Day. I’m enthusiastic about socializing more now that I’m vaccinated, but I’m also out of practice at dealing with people face-to-face. And I want to go perfume-shopping, but many stores are still encouraging mask-wearing and/or keeping testers and blotters out of reach, so it’s not actually a fun activity yet.

Long story short: I’m in the mood to fall back on the familiar, which for me means rose fragrances; and I’m still relying on fragrance samples that I receive from friends or in the mail. Here are a few that are new to me and made me feel like I was in my comfort zone.

Les Parfums de Rosine Rose Griotte is a rose perfume for a certain type of summer day…

Floraiku In the Rain, Regime des Fleurs Rock River Melody, The Observer Collection Homesick. ~ fragrance reviews

Posted by Jessica on 8 July 2021 6 Comments

I’ve mentioned before that I’m a city-dweller and a homebody with a very low degree of wanderlust. However, after the forced confinement of 2020 and early 2021, I felt the need to escape my urban surroundings and my daily routine for a few days. A few days at an inn in a wooded riverside landscape turned out to be just what I needed; even two hours’ travel from New York, there’s enough greenery and quiet solitude to shift my perspective.

Returning to my metropolitan perch, I found myself reaching for a few nature-themed, “green”-heavy fragrances that I’d gathered into a little pile earlier in the summer. They’ve been helping me to extend that outdoorsy mood a little longer, even as I settle down at my laptop with my window view of adjacent apartment buildings. Here are three I can recommend for sensory refreshment and mental wanderings…

Les Parfums de Rosine Rose Par Essence & Rose Absolument ~ fragrance reviews

Posted by Jessica on 10 June 2021 6 Comments

Just a week or two ago, I was saddened to learn of the death of Marie-Hélène Rogeon. As the founder of the present-day Les Parfums de Rosine, Rogeon revived the name of fashion designer Paul Poiret’s original fragrance house in 1991 and dedicated it to rose-inspired perfumes. Les Parfums de Rosine has been one of my favorite niche scent brands since I first encountered it at Barneys (circa 2005?) and I’m still grateful to Mme Rogeon every time I pick up one of my well-loved bottles.

In light of this news, it seems like an appropriate moment to review Rose Par Essence and Rose Absolument, two new-ish fragrances from Les Parfums de Rosine…
