By Kilian Flower of Immortality ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 13 September 2013 27 Comments

peach blossom

Last April, niche line By Kilian launched Flower of Immortality as the third fragrance in its Asian Tales collection. Like the other two fragrances in the collection, Bamboo Harmony and Water Calligraphy, Flower of Immortality was developed by perfumer Calice Becker. It is an homage to the peach blossom, a symbol of immortality and hospitality in Asian folklore, and was inspired specifically by the Chinese story “A Tale of the Fountain of the Peach Blossom Spring.”

Flower of Immortality is a fruity floral with notes of white peach, carrot, iris, blackcurrant bud, rose crystal, tonka bean and vanilla bean. It does what it promises, balancing those “smooth and juicy” fruit notes with its “sweet and powdery” florals. Don’t let the carrot scare you off: it’s not identifiable as a separate note. What you’ll really experience is the peach, and plenty of it…

Aroma M Beauty Camellia Body/Bath Oil ~ scented body product review

Posted by Jessica on 30 August 2013 13 Comments

Italian jasmine

Last autumn I wrote a review of two new beauty products from Aroma M, Camellia Hair Oil and Camellia Face Oil, which smelled as beautiful as they felt. Aroma M has just added another item to its beauty line, a Camellia Body/Bath Oil; now, in an ideal world, you could anoint and scent yourself from head to toe with these elixirs.

The Camellia Body/Bath Oil, like its two sister products, is crafted from thoughtfully selected, all-natural ingredients. Its base is a blend of camellia seed oil, grape seed oil, jojoba oil, and vitamin E; its scent is a bouquet of essential oils of jasmine, neroli, geranium, Moroccan rose and frankincense. The scent of these combined oils (which are all beneficial to the skin) is similar to that of the Camellia Face Oil, with the addition of a bewitching rose note…

Biehl Parfumkunstwerke PC01 ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 23 August 2013 24 Comments

mango

It’s taken me a while to get around to trying a few fragrances from Biehl Parfumkustwerke; not from a lack of interest, but just because they’re not widely distributed and because, well, they don’t have actual titles that capture my imagination and stick in my memory. I realize that Biehl’s naming-numbering system is very deliberate — as the company website proclaims, “even the names of the individual works are not puffed up by a seemingly sensual play of words but simply bear the initials of their artist and a consecutive work number.” All the same, I can’t help feeling like it’s homework for me to remember which is which.

In any case, random grumbles aside, I’ve recently tried PC01, which is perfumer Patricia Choux’s first contribution to the collection. It’s described by the phrases “sun, finally. a breath of wind. the soul smiles” (all lower-case) and its composition includes top notes of tangerine, neroli, davana, and mango leaves; a heart of peony, iris and mango; and a base of kaschmir [sic] wood, vetiver and musk. I thought this fragrance would be a good follow-up to my recent review of Rosie Jane Tilly, which was another fruity-floral with a summery theme…

Rosie Jane Tilly ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 16 August 2013 15 Comments

Rosie Jane Tilly mood board

Tilly is the second fragrance from Rosie Jane; I still haven’t tried the first fragrance, Leila Lou, but I recently came across a sample vial of Tilly and decided that this was a good time to try it, since Tilly is a perfume oil that “effortlessly captures the essence of summer” with notes of grapefruit, pineapple and tropical gardenia.

My experience of Tilly reminded me of my usual experience with the season of summer itself. On my skin, Tilly starts off like a freshly mixed fruit-juice punch — grapefruit and pineapple, yes, plus something like mango. It’s fun, the way a summer cocktail should be. (Remember L’Artisan Parfumeur Ananas Fizz? That was a wonderful example of the fruity-cocktail-as-perfume genre.) Unfortunately, after I’ve enjoyed the sensation of that seasonal refreshment, with its promise of long days, festive evenings, cute floral dresses, you get the picture — things go awry for a while…

Vitabath Moisturizing Body Wash and Hydrating Lotion ~ scented body product reviews

Posted by Jessica on 2 August 2013 5 Comments

Vitabath Moisturizing Body Wash and Hydrating Lotion

The original Vitabath Bath & Shower Geleé is such a familiar item, standing there in its clover-green label on the drugstore shelf, that we might not even really see it anymore. It’s a classic that’s worth keeping in mind, however, and now Vitabath offers a new range of fragranced bath and body products in four scent families: Fruit Fanatic, Spa Day, In Bloom and Cupcake Couture. I’ll probably pass on that last one, just because I’m not really a fan of dessert-y body products, but some of the fruit scents sound fun (especially Wild Red Cherry and Pomegranate & Blood Orange), and I’ve enjoyed sampling a few items from the In Bloom and Spa Day lines.

Since this has been a sticky, hot month or so, I’ve been reaching for cool, greenish scents, and Vitabath’s Spa Day collection offers several. I like Citron Leaves, a bright-and-light blend of verbena and lemongrass that gives an instant sense of refreshment. Green Tea & Sage is clean and herbal, with just a faint hint of something musky-woodsy beneath its smooth tea notes…
