Mugler Angel Nova ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 4 February 2022 15 Comments

When I learned that Thierry Mugler had passed away on January 23, I recalled my feelings the first time a sales associate offered me a sniff of the original Angel in a department store: I was intrigued, repelled, and somewhat confused. I didn’t buy it, but it lingered in my mind and I kept trying it whenever I spotted that distinctive pale blue star bottle on my shopping rounds.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, I’d occasionally smell Angel on another woman on the subway, at a party, at a professional conference, and sometimes it smelled glorious on someone else, and sometimes it didn’t, but it was always distinctive and not quite like any other perfume…until so many new fragrances suddenly started to smell more and more like Angel, and they just kept proliferating at every tier, from high-end niche to mainstream, not to mention candles and body products.

I did eventually purchase a small bottle of Angel…

Scent Trunk Aquione, Magnolia & Celestial Gala ~ fragrance reviews

Posted by Jessica on 20 January 2022 15 Comments

Earlier in this pandemic era, as I recall, multiple fashion/beauty magazines came out with similar listicles of the best scents to wear for imaginary travel, in the months of lockdown and pre-vaccine isolation. I liked the concept, but couldn’t help noticing a certain sameness about the selected perfumes and the locales they might conjure up: waves on a tropical beach…the flower fields of southern France…the sunlight and citrus trees of the Mediterranean.

For something more “off the beaten path,” in terms of scents and destinations, I’m personally turning to a handful of samples from Scent Trunk…

Aftelier Joie de Vert ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 30 December 2021 8 Comments

We recently marked the winter solstice in my part of the world, and I’m so relieved that we’re now slowly edging towards the “longer” days and milder temperatures of spring. I’m already extracting as much sensory value as possible from every brief outdoor errand, despite the grayness, the wind, and the ongoing threat of Covid-19: sniffing the air in local parks when I’m alone and can remove my mask, turning my face to catch a ray of winter sun, taking close visual note of evergreen trees and any lingering greenery in my neighborhood.

I’ve reread a few favorite works of children’s literature over the past year, including two that employ secluded, leafy spaces as symbols of renewal and transformation. One is Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden (1911), in which a pair of lonely children observe the arrival of springtime in a long-forgotten garden…

Les Parfums de Rosine Bulle de Rose ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 22 November 2021 13 Comments

As I read the press release for Les Parfums de Rosine’s Bulle de Rose — “rose bubble — I realized that very few perfumes have been inspired by bubbles, which is surprising, now that I think about it. Bubbles and fragrance can be described in similar terms: both are fragile, transparent, and ephemeral, shaped by a delicate dynamic between between liquid and vapor, temperature and pressure. Yet, apart from a few scents purporting to evoke bubble bath, there seem to be very few parallels between perfume and the airborne orbs of bubbles.

Now, however, we have Bulle de Rose, created for Les Parfums de Rosine by perfumer Serge de Oliveira…

Dusita Anamcara ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 29 October 2021 12 Comments

As more and more department stores and perfume boutiques continue to close in New York City — a situation that pre-dates Covid and has only worsened over the past year-and-a-half — I have fewer and fewer opportunities to try certain niche perfume brands. Back in the days when I could spend my lunch breaks at Barneys or just swing by Twisted Lily on my way home from work, I had a better idea what was out there, scent-wise. (Of course, the ever-spiraling annual number of new releases doesn’t help.)

Dusita feels like a luxury niche line that I might have encountered somewhere like Henri Bendel (to name one sadly missed store) if the brand had existed back in the earlier 2000s…
