Marc Jacobs Decadence ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 8 October 2015 44 Comments

Adriana Lima for Marc Jacobs Decadence

I felt like the next story to tell was one of this indulgence of pleasure and luxury, because that’s what decadence is. And I had to tell that in a way that was irreverent, which is very much part of who I am and how we tell stories, which is with an offhanded, irreverent sense of glamour, rather than first-degree glamour — something a bit more unconventional.1

So says Marc Jacobs, who has released a new feminine fragrance called Decadence for fall. Decadence was developed by perfumer Annie Buzantian and is a “sensual, luxurious, woody fragrance” with top notes of plum, iris flower and saffron; heart notes of Bulgarian rose, jasmine sambac and orris; and a base of vetiver, papyrus woods and liquid amber.

When I spritzed Decadence on a blotter at my local Macy’s and took a deep whiff, I gasped and recoiled (to the amusement of the security guard keeping an eye on things). It opens with something sharp and harsh that I can only describe as “knitting needle up the nostril.” It is some kind of aldehyde? I do not know…

Atelier Cologne Jasmin Angelique ~ fragrance review

Atelier Cologne Jasmin Angélique

I can’t believe it’s October already. I recently came across the sample of Atelier Cologne’s Jasmin Angélique that a friend passed to me over lunch one day back in July. That visit is still very fresh in my memory, and at the same time it seems much too long ago. That’s how things are with long-distance friends. Now Jasmin Angélique is inextricably bound in my imagination to that happy afternoon; fortunately, it lives up to that challenge for me.

Jasmin Angélique is the latest addition to Atelier’s Cologne Absolue collection, and it’s described as “a mysterious path to a secret garden”…

Jo Malone Mimosa & Cardamom ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 24 September 2015 41 Comments

Jo Malone Mimosa & Cardamom brand image

Jo Malone recently launched Mimosa & Cardamom, a new fragrance for women. It was developed by perfumer Marie Salamagne and its notes include honey, mimosa, heliotrope, rose, cardamom, sandalwood and tonka bean. Its tagline is “A new bohemia awaits.”

This list of notes made my mouth water, so to speak — lots of my favorites in there! And the visuals for Mimosa & Cardamom are fantastic, with that wavy-haired brunette model in Eastern-inspired wear, looking like some kind of contemporary Matisse odalisque as she lounges amongst decorative porcelain and big bunches of mimosa blooms. So, how is the fragrance? Well, it does feel like a Jo Malone, which could be either praise or a warning, depending on your point of view…

Top 10 Fall Fragrances 2015

Posted by Jessica on 18 September 2015 74 Comments

yellow leaf

It’s mid-September, and I’ve been flipping through various beauty-and-fashion magazines to keep up with things. I’ve been particularly struck by all the “New Season, New Scent” headlines. I know, I know — this is how the fragrance business stays in existence, yet this autumn I’m craving comfort and familiarity far more than novelty.

Looking back five years (!), I’d still wear most of my picks from my Top Ten Fall Fragrances of 2010, but I’ve also made a few “new” favorites since then. Here are my very personal picks for the months ahead.

I’m looking forward to an off-season seashore getaway soon, and I’ll be packing Diptyque Florabellio…

Anna Sui Romantica ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 17 September 2015 8 Comments

Anna Sui Romantica, brand images

I’ve always had a weakness for Anna Sui‘s playful, decorative perfume bottle designs, and Romantica is no exception. It’s an ombré pink creation with swirling floral motifs inspired by Art Nouveau design, with a gilt flower-bud cap that reminds me just a tiny bit of some vintage Lanvin Arpège bottles. The new fragrance inside, meanwhile, was developed by perfumer Steven DeMercado. Its “sparkling floral” composition features top notes of bergamot, mandarin, pomegranate and quince; heart notes of rose de Mai, osmanthus, jasmine, orange blossom, water lily and peony; and base notes of cedarwood, amber, sandalwood and musk.

Romantica falls about midway along the spectrum of Anna Sui’s floral scents to date…
