Annick Goutal Rose Pompon ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 18 February 2016 30 Comments

ag-rp-rs

Over the past two weeks I’ve immersed myself in the ten-fragrance Derek Lam 10 Crosby collection, so this week I’m treating myself to a springtime rose fragrance by one of my favorite niche houses — to cleanse my palate, if you will. Annick Goutal‘s new Rose Pompon was developed by Camille Goutal with perfumer Philippine Courtière, and is designed to evoke a “young Parisian woman” who “exudes joie de vivre.” Its notes include Bulgarian rose, taïf rose, peony, black currant, raspberry, pink pepper, cedar, patchouli and white musk.

I like Rose Pompon, although it doesn’t feel like much of a rose perfume on my skin…

Derek Lam 10 Crosby Rain Day, Something Wild, Ellipsis, Blackout & 2AM Kiss ~ fragrance reviews

Posted by Jessica on 11 February 2016 15 Comments

10-cros-2-s

I’m back. Last week I reviewed five of the ten fragrances from designer Derek Lam’s new 10 Crosby collection, and this week I’ll be covering the other five. This collection, in case you need a refresher, is comprised of “10 distinctive, modern fragrances based upon one street, 10 stories, 10 moments—all inspired from the world seen and imagined outside Derek Lam’s window at 10 Crosby Street.”

Rain Day

THE COLOR: Light green

THE FILM: A downtown cabbie and a glamorous passenger bond during their respective romantic crises. [Ed. note: you can watch all five of the films here, and we posted the other five last week.]

THE SCENT: Vetiver and neroli. Well, more like vetiver and neroli after they’ve come back from the dry-cleaner. Weirdly crisp and transparent. I sort of like it…

Derek Lam 10 Crosby Silent St., Looking Glass, Hi-Fi, Drunk on Youth, Afloat ~ fragrance reviews

Derek Lam 10 Crosby fragrance collection

American designer Derek Lam recently released a new collection of ten fragrances, a partnership with Butterfly Beauty (the producer and distributor of the Elizabeth and James line) and his brand’s first official foray into the perfume world. 10 Crosby Street is Lam’s Manhattan business address, and it inspired the name of his more affordable diffusion collection, which offers modern fashion with a “calculated simplicity and thoughtful detailing” for a younger “downtown” woman. Now the address is also being applied to these fragrances: “1 STREET, 10 STORIES, 10 CROSBY.”

The 10 Crosby packaging has a fresh new look, with minimalist white cylinders and a rainbow of glass shades…

Lalique Perles de Lalique ~ fragrance review

Perles de Lalique

Last weekend brought a near-record-breaking snowstorm to my little corner of the world, and when mass transit shut down and a temporary travel ban was put in place, I had no choice but to spend a cozy weekend indoors. It was the perfect occasion to spritz on clouds of Lorenzo Villori Teint de Neige or Serge Lutens Rahät Loukoum for fluffy comfort while I curled up to read and write.

Monday arrived right on schedule, however, and the roads had been cleared sufficiently and I had no excuse to hibernate any longer…

Diptyque + Olympia Le-Tan Rosaviola ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 21 January 2016 18 Comments

Diptyque + Olympia Le-Tan Rosaviola solid perfume with box

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Diptyque has introduced a limited edition capsule collection: Rosaviola, a scent packaged in collaboration with designer Olympia Le-Tan. I’m not specially a fan of Le-Tan, whom The New York Times has praised for her “glamorous geek aesthetic” and her clutch purses that reinterpret classic book covers in fabric and embroidery — a “nod to a bygone era when people carried actual books,” the Times tells us.1 I still carry real books, rather than a $2000 clutch, but I’m not one of the well-connected Le-Tan’s celebrity clients and never will be. What I am, however, is someone who can not resist a violet-rose perfume, so here we are.

Rosaviola is composed of notes of violet, violet leaf, raspberry, iris and leather; it’s meant to evoke the scent of a woman’s handbag and the cosmetics tucked inside…
