Edward Bess Spanish Veil ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 23 February 2017 19 Comments

John Singer Sargent El Jaleo

Last week I swooned a bit over La Femme Bohème, one of three new fragrances from high-end cosmetics line Edward Bess; this week I’ve been wearing Spanish Veil. This is another oriental scent, also developed by perfumer Carlos Benaïm, with notes of sandalwood, tonka bean and guaic wood.

Spanish Veil was inspired by inspired by the artifice and mystery of facial veils worn like a “second skin”: “Scents of the outside world are trapped in the starched net, a magnet for the plumes of smoky incense wafting through ancient basilica walls that mix with the smells of savage animal hides in bullfighter rings and clouds of white dust native to the Latin land.” But once we get past that somewhat overwrought prose…

Edward Bess La Femme Boheme ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 16 February 2017 42 Comments

Mrs. Rita de Alba de Acosta Lydig 1913

Has there ever been a fragrance that you’ve just had to smell because of its name? For me, any perfume named La Femme Bohème would have been tempting. The fact that this fragrance is also one of three developed by perfumer Carlos Benaïm for Edward Bess made it irresistible, so off I went to sample it.

Aficionados of luxury cosmetics who happened to be in New York City in 2007 were caught off-guard by Edward Bess’s initial appearance at Bergdorf Goodman. He seemed impossibly young as the founder of a cosmetics line, but there he was, debuting his first collection…

Calvin Klein Deep Euphoria ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 9 February 2017 11 Comments

Margot Robbie for Calvin Klein Deep Euphoria

I really don’t consider myself a perfume snob. Yes, I do favor quite a few fancy niche fragrances, but my tastes still run the gamut. Case in point: I’ve loved Calvin Klein Euphoria ever since its launch in 2005. I remember making a visit to Lord & Taylor during a lunch break, spraying some Euphoria on my arm, and swooning in delight. I couldn’t wait to describe my reaction on MakeupAlley that evening: “Oh my! I felt as though I’d been kissed.”

So now, more than a decade later, we have the latest Euphoria flanker: Deep Euphoria, described as a floral chypre with a “signature of sensuality and modern femininity” and “a smooth, sensual texture.” (Whatever that means.) …

Pinrose Merry Maker, Pillowtalk Poet & Tambourine Dreamer ~ fragrance reviews

Pinrose Merry Maker, Pillowtalk Poet & Tambourine Dreamer towelettes

I can’t believe I’m starting a review with the words, “I was sitting at the hair salon, flipping through a back issue of Cosmopolitan magazine…” but there’s a first time for everything, so: I was sitting at the hair salon, flipping through a back issue of Cosmopolitan magazine, and I stopped short at an article titled “Click…Then Sniff.”1 Apparently “tech is turning fragrance on its head,” and the way we shop for fragrance — which is “ultimately an emotional purchase,” in case you didn’t know — is being revolutionized. How?! I needed to know.

The explanation was pretty dull and familiar to anyone who has been interested in perfume for the past decade-plus: through approaches like sample programs, visual imagery and exclusivity. (To translate that back into 2005 terminology: swapping, illustrated blog posts and Serge Lutens bell jars.) One of the article’s featured brands was Pinrose, which started as a “try-at-home” perfume line but has since branched out into brick-and-mortar stores…

Lush Toothy Tabs in Sparkle, Oral Pleasure & Limelight ~ scented body product review

Posted by Jessica on 26 January 2017 27 Comments

Lush Toothy Tabs Sparkle, Oral Pleasure & Limelight

As long as they’ve been around, Lush have excelled at rethinking everyday bath and body products as novelties. Bubble bath in a solid orb? Body scrub molded into a palm-sized square? A heart-shaped bar of lotion? Check. Now they’ve transformed the most basic self-care ritual of all with a “solid toothpaste alternative” called Toothy Tabs.

Toothy Tabs are small pellets about the size of aspirin tablets, packaged in a container not unlike an actual aspirin bottle. You pop one “tab” into your mouth, chew it lightly so that it breaks up a bit (don’t swallow!), and then start pushing it around with a wet toothbrush. The tab will dissolve into a gently abrasive foam that really does an effective job…
