A Handful of Hand Creams for Spring 2017 ~ scented body product review

Posted by Jessica on 30 March 2017 27 Comments

&OtherStories Lemon Daydream Hand Lotion and Graine de Pastel Organic Hand Cream

It’s officially spring in my part of the world, although my skin might beg to differ: the recent ups and downs in temperature and humidity have wreaked havoc with my face and hands, leaving things feeling a bit rough and itchy. As of today, I’m still wearing my winter coat, but I’ve expanded my hand cream collection so that there’s a tube or bottle waiting for me in every tote bag and desk drawer. Here’s a sampling of my recent good-smelling favorites.

I’ll admit that I splurged on Graine de Pastel Organic Hand Cream (top right) just for the box design, but now I’m hooked on the cream inside the old-fashioned metal tube…

Jo Malone Blue Hyacinth and Leather & Artemisia ~ fragrance reviews

Posted by Jessica on 23 March 2017 41 Comments

Jo Malone Bloomsbury Set

Jo Malone recently launched its springtime limited edition collection, The Bloomsbury Set. Once again, the collection has an appropriately English theme. These five fragrances — Blue Hyacinth, Garden Lilies, Leather & Artemisia, Tobacco & Mandarin and Whisky & Cedarwood — were reportedly inspired by the Bloomsbury Group and artist Vanessa Bell’s Charleston House in Sussex. I say “reportedly” because that information was shared in early press releases, although the Jo Malone website now only refers vaguely to “free spirited artists” living “an unconventional life in their legendary country house.”

Samples of Jo Malone’s limited editions are hard to come by, so this review is based on visit to a Jo Malone counter and a generous application of two fragrances that particularly interested me…

Tadashi Shoji Eau de Rose ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 16 March 2017 46 Comments

Tadashi Shoji, fall 2017 runway

I have to admit that I didn’t recognize Tadashi Shoji’s name when I read the press release for his first fragrance release. After a quick bit of research, I learned that he’s a Japanese fashion designer best known for his special-occasion dresses. His designs have gained an ardent following of women who love their floral prints, embroidery and other embellishments, and figure-flattering cuts, and you may have seen some of his dresses worn by such prominent women as Michelle Obama (multiple times), Octavia Spencer (for her 2012 Academy Awards win), Katy Perry, Christina Hendricks and Paris Jackson (yes, Michael Jackson’s daughter).

Eau de Rose was developed for Shoji by consultant Ruth Sutcliffe with perfumers Jacques Chabert and Nathalie Koobus, and it was reportedly inspired by Japanese gardens and Shoji’s love of roses…

Diptyque Eau des Sens Soap ~ body product review

Diptyque Eau des Sens Soap

Sometimes I just need to cleanse my olfactory palate, not to mention my mind, after trying too many perfumes in a short period and overthinking everything. This is the right time for me to remember the simple pleasures of a really good scented soap. Soap was one of my “gateway” products into living a fragranced life — remember the giant Fresh soaps that were sold at Anthropologie in the 1990s (Verbena!), or the colorful and affordable glycerine bars lined up in every Body Shop?

Diptyque’s soaps require a bit more seeking out, not to mention more cash, but they’re ideal for very occasional splurges or special gifts for appreciative friends…

Tory Burch Love Relentlessly ~ fragrance review

Tory Burch Love Relentlessly, brand image

‘If I told you that I love you, would you hold it against me?’

My father wrote this note to my mother, which he ran in the newspaper and signed ‘Love, Relentless.’ — Tory Burch

Love Relentlessly is a new-ish fragrance from the Tory Burch fashion and lifestyle brand. It was developed by perfumers Domitille Bertier and Yves Cassar, and its “charmingly youthful” composition is a “modern chypre” with notes of pink pepper, pink grapefruit, lemon, pear, raspberry, lychee, rose, orris, jasmine sambac, patchouli, amber, sandalwood, vetiver, cedarwood and tonka bean.

This list includes quite a few notes that I normally avoid, but nothing that irks me as much as the grammatical errors in that promotional copy…
