Gulsha Skincare & Aroma M Camellia Prickly Pear Face Oil ~ scented body product reviews

Posted by Jessica on 7 September 2017 15 Comments

Gülsha skincare

People tend to have strong feelings about fragrance in their skincare. Some prefer everything unscented; others don’t mind a light scent here or there, providing it doesn’t linger. Personally, I’m happiest when an effective and gentle skincare product also smells good to me. No matter how well a product works, if I dislike the scent, I can’t use it; but if my skin and my nose happen to agree, then I’m delighted.

Since I already love wearing rose perfumes, I’m partial to rose-scented body products and skincare. I’m currently fascinated by Gülsha, a skincare collection made by a Turkey-based family business that has produced raw materials like rose absolute and rose water for the fragrance industry since 1965….

Olfactive Studio Close Up & Woody Mood ~ fragrance reviews

Posted by Jessica on 31 August 2017 5 Comments

I just spent a few enjoyable minutes doing some online window-shopping for sweaters and autumn accessories; it’s almost September, after all, and what better time to fantasize about a new pair of boots? This is the moment when I also start thinking about switching my summer perfumes (fruity roses, sheer beachy blends) for spicier, richer compositions. Fortunately, I have on hand small samples of two appropriate fragrances from French niche line Olfactive Studio: Close Up, launched in fall 2016, and the recently released Woody Mood.

Close Up was developed for Olfactive Studio by perfumer Annick Menardo and (as is customary for the brand) was inspired by a photograph: a very close view of an eyeball’s iris by Suren Malvelyan…

Parfums de Nicolai Rose Royale ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 24 August 2017 15 Comments

Rose at Le Palais Royal

Earlier this year, French niche line Parfums de Nicolaï launched Rose Royale, a soliflore rose fragrance inspired by the gardens of Paris’s Palais-Royal. Perfumer Patricia de Nicolaï, who developed it with her son Axel de Nicolaï, describes it as a “delicate” scent, a “natural and fresh rose with a hint of fruity notes.”

Rose Royale’s notes include black currant bud, passion fruit, bergamot, rose, coriander, ambrette seed, immortelle, sandalwood, guaiac wood and musk. Sounds like a lot going on for a solifore, right? — but on my skin it made sense…

Hermes Rose Amazone, take two ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 17 August 2017 8 Comments

Hermès Rose Amazone

Yes, you’re remembering correctly: Robin did write a brief review of Rose Amazone when it was launched in 2014 as a flanker to Hermès ‘s 1974 classic Amazone. Rose Amazone was developed by Jean-Claude Ellena, Hermès’s in-house perfumer at the time, as a modern interpretation of Amazone: “a sparkling, tangy and tender perfume, brightened by citrus fruits, currants and raspberries.”

The idea of a young and fruity flanker was already a cliché in 2014…

Hilde Soliani Sweet Home & Il Tempo delle Mele ~ fragrance reviews

Posted by Jessica on 10 August 2017 11 Comments

Hilde Soliani Sweet Home & Il Tempo delle Mele

As a follow-up to my review of two Hilde Soliani fragrances, Una Tira l’Altra and Conaffetto, I’ve been sampling two more offerings from this line: Sweet Home and Il Tempo delle Mele. Both are gourmand perfumes, and both were inspired by specific chefs and dishes that left lasting impressions on Soliani’s palate and nose.

Sweet Home is an olfactory tribute to a dessert Soliani enjoyed at Lido 84, Riccaro Camanini’s restaurant overlooking Lake Garda in northern Italy…
