Kusco-Murphy Bedroom Hair ~ scented body products

Posted by Jessica on 3 November 2007 5 Comments

Kusco Murphy Bedroom Hair

Every fragrance addict owns a few scented products that she (or he) privately opens just to sniff, even when she’s not using them; they may be actual perfumes, lotions or soaps, or even hair products. My latest confession in this area is my strange need to unscrew my jar of Kusco-Murphy Bedroom Hair and inhale its fragrance every time I spot the jar sitting on the bathroom counter.

Bedroom Hair is certainly attractive enough to leave out in plain view, unlike the squeezed-out tubes and brightly colored plastic bottles that are concealed under my sink. Its label design is a little bit romantic and little bit rock-and-roll, with gold, monogram-like letters scrolling across a purple background. The product inside is similarly enticing, a shimmering golden gel…

Lush Charity Pot Hand and Body Lotion ~ scented body products

Posted by Jessica on 20 October 2007 6 Comments

Lush Charity Pot hand & body lotion

Charity Pot, a newcomer to Lush’s shelves, wears its conscience on its sleeve — or rather, on its lid. According to Lush, all proceeds from the sale of this fragranced lotion will benefit a number of charitable organizations and activist groups, which are identified by stickers on the tops of the containers.

When I purchased a tub of Charity Pot in the United Kingdom last spring, it was designated with the logo for No Widening M1, an alliance opposed to the widening of the M1 motorway in England. Since then, I’ve been curious to see which organizations would be chosen for the North American launch of this product. So far, the list includes Clean Ocean Action, Amazon Conservation Team, Tree People, UNICEF, International Fund for Animal Welfare, and WaterCan. And, like all of Lush’s other products, this one is produced with ecological and environmental awareness, since no animal testing is allowed, limited synthetic ingredients are used, and the packaging is kept as minimal as possible…

Penhaligon’s Violetta Talcum Powder and Colonial Williamsburg Powder of Violets ~ scented body products

Penhaligon's Violetta Dusting Powder

Dusting powder is a wonderfully nostalgic treat. It’s not a strictly necessary grooming ritual, but the act of patting a fragranced powder onto the body with a fluffy puff can make anyone feel like the flawlessly beautiful star of a 1930s film, even without a bias-cut satin gown or an Art Deco dressing table. Of course, the use of talc to scent and soften the skin predates Hollywood by a few centuries, so it seems appropriate that some long-established merchants are keeping its tradition alive. Penhaligon’s is a perfumery founded during the Victorian era, and Colonial Williamsburg is the recreation of an eighteenth-century city; appropriately enough, both offer body powders scented with violet fragrance…

Body Moose Honey Harmony Gator Hydrator ~ scented body products

Posted by Jessica on 23 September 2007 6 Comments

Body Moose Honey Harmonly Gator HydratorWith its string of playful names and its retro-preppy packaging, Body Moose Honey Harmony Gator Hydrator would be easy to dismiss as a merely “fun” treat for the body. However, as soon as I actually smelled and touched this product, I forgot all about alligators and bumblebees and pink-and-green polka dots, and I realized that it’s actually a serious and sensual moisturizer for the body.

Gator Hydrator is a balm with an unusual texture: it feels solid but slightly spongy to the touch, like a piece of Turkish Delight dessert. It looks almost too thick to use. However, if you apply some pressure and scoop up a bit…

Memoire Liquide Bespoke Perfumery ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 8 September 2007 13 Comments

Memoire Liquide perfume bottles

Henri Bendel in New York now houses the second existing Memoire Liquide counter, following the original location at Fred Segal in Santa Monica, California. Memoire Liquide is the creation of Robin Coe Hutshing, the founder of beauty-mecca Studio at Fred Segal, and her sister Jennifer Coe Bakewell. The company is an updated interpretation of a traditional apothecary offering “bespoke,” or custom-made, fragrances, and its written statement invokes Proust’s famous madeleine as the classic motif of “the intertwining nature of scent and memory.” Just as memories are intrinsically personal, these fragrances may be mixed and matched to fit the wearer’s own history, tastes, and imagination…
