Badger Body Butter in Antique Rose ~ scented body product review

Posted by Jessica on 13 January 2008 6 Comments

Badger Body Butter in Antique Rose fragranceAs the winter continues, I’m trying to heal my chapped hands and ragged cuticles, and I want to prevent those tiny, painful cracks that sometimes emerge on the tips of my fingers during freezing-cold weather. My latest weapon against these aggravating little seasonal afflictions is Badger Body Butter. It has a base of natural ingredients, including jojoba, olive oil, cocoa butter, and beeswax, and its Antique Rose fragrance is mixed from essences of rose otto, patchouli, cardamom, and blood orange.

If you are already a fan of Badger’s popular Chai Rose lip balm (with its scent of cardamom, rose, and vanilla), you will most likely enjoy this Body Butter. The two products aren’t identical, but they smell similar enough to please the same noses…

Clarins “Relax” Bath & Shower Concentrate and Body Balm ~ scented body products

Posted by Jessica on 30 December 2007 8 Comments

Clarins Relax seriesIn the calm after the holiday storm of shopping, socializing, travel, and various overindulgences, a few of us might be looking for simple means of relaxation. This is an ideal time to try the “Relax” products from Clarins, which happens to produce some very fine aromatherapy products alongside its skincare and makeup lines.

The “Relax” Bath & Shower Concentrate, which I’ve been using as a shower gel, is a low-lathering liquid fragranced with essential oils of geranium, basil and petitgrain. The accompanying Body Balm is a creamy lotion, just thick enough to feel indulgent but light enough to be easily absorbed into the skin; its aromatherapeutic essences are the same as those of the Bath & Shower Concentrate, with an additional note of chamomile.

The “Relax” scent is designed to enhance a sense of tranquility…

Scented Lip Balms: A Round-Up for Winter 2007

Posted by Jessica on 1 December 2007 26 Comments

Is winter finally approaching the northeastern United States, just in time for the holidays? In anticipation, I’m stocking up on lip balms for the colder, drier weather. If you’re doing the same thing, and you’re feeling a need for something a bit fancier than ChapStick, something less ubiquitous than the reliable Burt’s Bees, or just a change from that greasy tin of Smith’s Rose Salve you’ve been carrying around for months, here is a six-pack of lip balm ideas.

Badger Balm Lavender & OrangeThe happy badger mascot of the Badger Balm line would make anyone smile, and the feel and scent of Badger Balm’s Lavender & Orange Lip Balm are even more smile-inducing. As the company’s slogan boasts, all Badger Balm products are “100% natural, mostly organic, totally good!” This balm is an emollient blend of olive oil, beeswax, and aloe vera, fragranced with essential oils of lavender, sweet orange, and Sicilian orange…

Lush Solids Silky Underwear and Potion ~ perfume review

Posted by Jessica on 25 November 2007 14 Comments

Lush Silky Underwear Solid Perfume

Lush has just released a line of eight solid perfumes with scents borrowed from some of their popular bath and body products. Their “solid” formula is a mixture of wax, cocoa butter, and jojoba oil, fragranced with a combination of synthetic perfume notes and natural essences. These perfumes are packaged in the same aluminum tins as Lush’s lip balms and the now-discontinued aromatherapy “temple balms”; in fact, they were displayed in the same scuffed wood boxes that used to hold the aromatherapy balms, next to the cash registers, in both Lush shops that I visited. I hope they’ll be shown to better advantage sometime in the near future, because they’re worth trying.

The two fragrances that I have sampled are Silky Underwear and Potion, and both are very true to the original Lush products that inspired them…

Estee Lauder Youth Dew Body Creme ~ scented body products

Posted by Jessica on 8 November 2007 8 Comments

Estee Lauder Youth Dew Body Creme

There is an often-told anecdote about Youth Dew. In the 1960s, Estée Lauder visited the Galeries Lafayette in Paris with a proposal for opening a counter there; however, the department store’s buyers were not interested in carrying her products. On her way out, the story goes, Estée not-so-accidentally spilled some Youth Dew bath oil on the store’s carpet. So many customers noticed the resulting aroma and demanded to purchase the oil that the store relented and placed an order for the entire Lauder line. As Angela has pointed out in her review of Youth Dew, its sillage is just as potent now as it was decades ago. I own and love the Eau de Parfum, but when I prefer to keep Youth Dew’s rich, retro spiciness all to myself, I wear the Body Creme instead.

Youth Dew Perfumed Body Creme is the heaviest lotion I’ve ever owned, literally: its jar of ribbed, frosted glass is weighty enough to cause severe pain if dropped on an unsuspecting foot (although, I suppose, a true Youth Dew wearer would be sure-handed enough never to drop it). Its lid is gleaming gold, as shiny as the interlacing initials of the Estée Lauder logo embossed on the pale turquoise and white box…
