Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb Hair Mist ~ hair perfumes, part 1

Posted by Jessica on 7 September 2008 13 Comments

Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb Hair Mist

Members of perfume chat boards occasionally debate the pros and cons of wearing perfume in their hair. Some fragrance lovers feel it’s a discreet and long-lasting way to enjoy perfume; others worry that the alcohol in the perfume will dry out their hair or damage their hair-color. I’ve always thrown caution to the winds, figuring that a spritz of Eau de Toilette is less damaging than many environmental factors (or most mainstream hair products, for that matter), but I’m also willing to try some of the new perfumes created specifically for hair.

Viktor & Rolf’s new Flowerbomb Bomblicious Perfumed Hair Mist joins the Flowerbomb line-up of Eau de Parfum, “extreme” Eau de Parfum, Eau de Toilette, body cream, body lotion, and shower gel. Its bottle is a slightly smaller version of Flowerbomb’s “grenade,” complete with sealing-wax “pin,” cast in frosted glass…

Red Flower Ocean Purifying Body Wash and Moisturizing Lotion

Posted by Jessica on 17 August 2008 4 Comments

Red Flower Ocean body products

All the scents in Red Flower’s revamped (or “recrafted”) Flower Skin line are named for specific flowers or fruits, with the exception of Ocean. Red Flower doesn’t give the notes for this fragrance; instead, Ocean is simply described as “a vast scent that opens the lungs and cools the skin.” It seems to be dominated by an intense dose of eucalyptus, or some fragrant variety of laurel, with subtle notes of mint and something kelp-like below the cleansing, camphorous heart of the fragrance.

According to the Red Flower website, Ocean Body Wash (shown) and Moisturizing Lotion are both concocted from “organic flowers, bio-dynamic honey, and wild-crafted botanical extracts.” The Body Wash actually looks and feels like honey, and its ingredients list also includes spirulina (an algae rich in fatty acids and other nutrients). When I use the Body Wash in the shower (lots of lather!), or even just to wash my hands at the sink, I can feel Ocean’s essential oils clearing my head…

Frederic Fekkai Summer Hair Beach Waves, and a minor rant ~ scented body products

Posted by Jessica on 2 August 2008 21 Comments

Frederic Fekkai Beach WavesBeach Waves, one of the products in Frederic Fekkai’s seasonal Summer Hair line, is a “tousled wave spray” with “Solarshield protection.” It was created as a styling product to give a windswept effect with the added benefit of sunscreen. I already have wavy hair, and I like the way this product maintains and emphasizes my usual texture while giving it light hold and an extra bit of volume. As long as I apply it somewhat sparingly, it dries without any stickiness or stiffness.

In general, the quality of Fekkai products is high, and Beach Waves is no exception. It also has a noticeable fragrance: a tropical blend of coconut, gardenia, ozone, and orange notes. This fragrance recreates the artificial scent of many suntan lotions and therefore conjures up memories of the beach…

The Swedish Summer Soap by Victoria Scandinavian Soap

Posted by Jessica on 6 July 2008 26 Comments

First things first: I strongly dislike summer. I’ll do anything possible to avoid high temperatures and strong sunlight, I never wear shorts or flip-flops, and I’m customarily immune to the appeal of any product claiming to evoke the experience of the beach. All the same, I couldn’t resist the packaging of The Swedish Summer Soap from Victorian Scandinavian Soap. The cheerful illustration of a sailboat beneath a sunny sky, the Swedish labeling on other side of the box (“Saltsjötvål” is the soap’s true name), and the promise that the soap “floats in fresh and salt water,” not that I have plans of using it anywhere other than my own shower — somehow, this all promises an ideal vision of a summer that would leave me feeling rosy-cheeked and optimistic rather than sweaty, dehydrated, and irritable…

Sonoma Scent Studio Velvet Rose Shea Body Cream ~ scented body products

Posted by Jessica on 21 June 2008 8 Comments

As I’ve probably already mentioned, rose is my favorite fragrance note. I manage to refrain from reviewing rose-scented products too often, since that would seem repetitious to most readers (fellow rose-lovers exempted!), but June is the month of roses so I’ll indulge myself this time around.

I often wear complex rose-based fragrances like Les Parfums de Rosine’s Poussière de Rose or Bond no. 9’s West Side, and I search out rose-scented body products to match. Sometimes, however, I just crave a pure rose without any citrus, spice, wood, or vanilla notes. Sonoma Scent Studio’s Velvet Rose Shea Body Cream delivers a rose soliflore in lotion form, with artful simplicity and high-quality ingredients. The Velvet Rose scent gives the impression of a bunch of newly picked pink and red roses, still slightly moist with dew or rain…
