Liberty ~ shopping for perfume in London

Posted by Guest Shopper on 10 October 2007 — 0 Comments — Comments are closed

Libery London exteriorLiberty has to be the prettiest store in London. The first time you turn off Regent Street and see that mad Tudor frontage, it’s almost impossible not to laugh out loud. In the midst of all the stately Georgian architecture in this part of central London, Liberty looks like a joke played on the city by the Disney Corporation.

In some ways it is, except the joker wasn’t Walt but a chap called Arthur Lasenby Liberty, who had the store built in 1924. So, not Tudor at all! It was created using the timbers of two ships, the HMS Impregnable and the HMS Hindustan, and the length of the Great Marlborough Street frontage is apparently the same as that of the Hindustan.

Inside, the store is even more impressive. Arthur Liberty wanted to have his customers feel as if they were walking round their own homes (this tells you something about the kind of customers he had), so the store was arranged as small rooms round three galleried lightwells. The place gleams with carved panelling; it’s a bit like walking round a stately home where you’re actually allowed to pick up the exhibits…

Henri Bendel ~ shopping for perfume in New York

Posted by Guest Shopper on 30 September 2007 — 0 Comments — Comments are closed

Fragrance department at Henri BendelFor years, the fragrance department at Henri Bendel was a tempting but awkwardly placed niche at the rear of the crowded main floor. Now it occupies a prime spot on the second level: ascend the curving staircase, and you’ll find its expanded, highly browsable selection. The department is intimate enough to feel comfortable, but large enough to offer a rich variety, balancing classic houses Caron and Chanel, the established niche line L’Artisan Parfumeur (which occupies an entire in-house boutique at Bendel), and small, local company Aroma M Perfumes, to name just a few examples.

This is also the only store in New York that sells Etat Libre d’Orange and Memoire Liquide, two new brands with very different yet equally compelling personalities. Back outside the oasis of the fragrance area, continue to explore the adjacent skincare section and the high-pitched hustle of the cosmetics department downstairs…

Studio at Fred Segal, Santa Monica ~ shopping for perfume in Los Angeles

Studio at Fred Segal

Fred Segal in Santa Monica is a large indoor mall consisting of independent fashion boutiques catering to the most trend-conscious shoppers. Among those boutiques, you’ll find Studio at Fred Segal, bursting with the trendiest fragrance and beauty delights, and a slice of heaven for perfumistas. Studio at Fred Segal is owned by Robin Coe-Hutshing (the founder of Burn candles and the Memoire Liquide lines, among others).

Fragrance brands: Naturally my visit was concerned with the vast array of scented products. There seemed to be no end to the variety of brands available — L’Artisan Parfumeur, Serge Lutens, Comptoir Sud Pacifique, Ineke, Mona D’Orio, Ellie D, Burn, Sage Machado, Vie Luxe, Mark Birley, Penhaligon’s, i Profumi di Firenze, Tocca, ElizabethW, and dozens more…

L’Artisan Parfumeur ~ shopping for perfume in New York

Posted by Guest Shopper on 19 September 2007 — 0 Comments — Comments are closed

L'Artisan Boutique on Madison Avenue

Two years after it opened its first New York City boutique in 2005, L’Artisan Parfumeur now has four locations throughout Manhattan. The flagship boutique on Madison Avenue is the largest, with plenty of space to showcase the company’s imaginative approach to fragrance and sophisticated attention to detail.

Like the other boutiques, it offers L’Artisan’s full line of perfumes, including the candied-almond Jour de Fête and the spicy L’Eau de Navigateur, as well as the limited edition Harvest fragrances (the next one, in October, will be Iris Pallida 2007). Nestled into other display niches around the shop are L’Artisan’s home fragrance oils, candles, Jatamansi natural body products, and whimsical, colorful sachets. The gracious sales assistants are happy to guide you in exploring the product line, whether it’s your first visit to L’Artisan or you’ve been wearing Mûre et Musc for twenty years…

Harvey Nichols ~ shopping for perfume in London

Posted by Guest Shopper on 10 September 2007 — 0 Comments — Comments are closed

Harvey Nichols

This 19th century department store was famously the favourite shopping destination of Princess Diana. You can see why — five floors of fashion include every major designer from Armani to Zac Posen, taking in Jimmy Choo and Christian Louboutin on the way. Luckily for perfume fans, the cosmetics and fragrance department occupies most of the ground floor. Even luckier, Knightsbridge tube station delivers you as close to a spritz of Robert Piguet’s Baghari as it could possibly manage without actually emerging inside the store.

Although Harrods, a little way along Knightsbridge, tends to get the pick of the ‘exclusives’, Harvey Nicks is more compact and feels friendlier (you’re more likely to get hold of a sample here). Even more importantly, there is a niche perfume paradise on the fourth floor, hosting a treasure trove of brands which are hard to find in one place anywhere else in London…
