Barneys New York ~ shopping for perfume in New York

Posted by Guest Shopper on 18 November 2007 — 0 Comments — Comments are closed

Fragrance counter at Barneys New York

Since its expansion in the 1980s, when it transformed itself from a reliable menswear merchant into a trendsetter for both sexes, Barneys has been known for showcasing new designers as well as established pioneers of fashion. In the flagship store on Madison Avenue, the beauty department occupies the entire lower level, which is cleverly dubbed The Foundation. If you can pass the countless cosmetics counters without getting distracted, you will find the fragrance area stretched along one wall. The men’s and women’s scents are arranged together along a single counter, and that counter is staffed by a phalanx of assistants who will demonstrate the fragrances, letting you know which ones are newest to the line-up…

Le Labo at Liberty ~ perfume shopping in London

Posted by Guest Shopper on 8 November 2007 — 0 Comments — Comments are closed

Le Labo store window at Liberty, London

The new Le Labo area at Liberty opened on October 11th, just outside the main perfume room. As yet, they are not offering Discovery sets or travel sizes, just the base collection of ten scents and the room fragrances and candles. They also stock the Olfactionary (a “dictionary” with 40 natural perfume essences “to refine and develop your sense of smell”), for £295.

The arrangement, just as in their New York boutique, is that the scents are made up for you while you wait. And, just as in New York, there are white tiles and lab coats, and a generally scientific feel about the whole enterprise. There was clearly a lot of interest and excitement from customers when I visited — both from men and women…

C.O. Bigelow Chemists ~ shopping for perfume in New York

Posted by Guest Shopper on 30 October 2007 — 0 Comments — Comments are closed

CO Bigelow Chemists in New YorkFounded as an apothecary in 1838, C. O. Bigelow Chemists has thrived into the twenty-first century as an unlikely, but very popular, combination of neighborhood drugstore and high-end beauty emporium. Its aisles are crowded with long-time local customers waiting for their prescriptions to be filled at the pharmacy, as well as visiting aficionados of luxury toiletries, hard-to-find home fragrance lines, and unusual perfumes.

Through an agreement with Limited Brands, the Bigelow brand name is used on newly developed products sold at Limited Brands’ various stores (Henri Bendel, Bath & Body Works), and Limited Brands has opened several shops under the C.O. Bigelow name in other cities. This original location, however, is still independently owned by the same family that bought the company in 1939…

Selfridges ~ shopping for perfume in London

Posted by Guest Shopper on 28 October 2007 — 0 Comments — Comments are closed

Selfridges in London

Selfridges is the largest department store in Oxford Street, taking up a whole block to itself. Whether it’s bigger than Harrods in terms of floor area is debatable, but it’s close. Selfridges has never been able to quite measure up to the glamour of Harrods, but it certainly tries hard.

Life is made simple for perfume lovers by the fact that the main niche perfumery area is right inside the main doors. This also makes it something of a corridor, as it’s always full of people trying to get through it to get into the main store. The area is also rather dark and cave-like, and perfumes are often shelved around pillars, where it’s easy not to notice them at all.

Despite these disadvantages, the perfume room is worth exploring; Selfridges is often the first to stock exciting lines and the sales assistants are knowledgeable. Beyond the perfume cavern is the beauty hall, where you’ll find perfume brands such as Laura Mercier on sale…

Caron ~ shopping for perfume in New York

Posted by Guest Shopper on 14 October 2007 — 0 Comments — Comments are closed

Caron at Phyto UniverseA first visit to the Caron boutique in Manhattan can feel something like a treasure hunt. Although the shop’s address is 715 Lexington Avenue, you must enter at the side of the building, around the corner on 58th Street. The door is marked with a sign for PhytoUniverse, the botanical haircare salon that shares its quarters with Caron (they are owned by the same company, the Alès Group), but you might spy a few Caron bottles on display in the small entrance lobby. The receptionist will direct you into an elevator, which you ride to the third floor. There, Caron is ensconced in two elegantly appointed alcoves off the main waiting area of the Phyto salon.

Since it first opened its doors in Paris in 1904, Caron has specialized in floral fragrances of all persuasions, from the lush orange blossom of Narcisse Noir (memorably worn by femme fatale Gloria Swanson in Sunset Boulevard) to the light, fresh lilies of the valley of Muguet de Bonheur…
